Thinking about starting DIY projects at home? These five essential tools are the perfect launch point!
I hear this all the time from women who read my blog: “I can't build that because I don't have those tools or know how to use them.”
Well, friend, neither did I when I started out. One of the main reasons I began this blog was to encourage and empower women to do exactly what I do. If I can do it, so can you!

When I started out, I refinished furniture or built my own because we didn't have money for new pieces. Now I often DIY things because I can't find what I want, or because I can make something better for much less than the store charges.
Since both of my parents are handy, I was comfortable with a basic hammer and drill. But I had never used a saw until the day I brought one home from the store.
I'd never used a circular saw, a reciprocating saw or a Kreg Jig. I simply bought them, read the instructions and hoped I wouldn't lose a finger. Just kidding, I'm always extremely careful! Follow safety protocols and stay alert.
I love sharing my favorite tips and tools for DIY with you! I've shown you how to remove drywall anchors and choose the best light bulbs, plus how to change a light fixture! I hope these help you create a home you love on a budget!
My Go-To Beginner DIY Tools
1. An Orbital or Sheet Sander
Nearly every wood project gets sanded at some point. And here's a little secret: nine times out of 10, an electric sander makes the job so much faster and easier. I actually own two.

I have an orbital sander, which is a real workhorse, and a sheet sander. Both work wonderfully!
But be careful using an orbital sander on anything you plan to stain, since it can leave circular swirl marks in the wood. A sheet sander won't do that when you sand in the direction of the grain.
2. Miter Saw
This was my very first big tool purchase. I think I got it for Christmas or my birthday, and I was thrilled!! I wanted to build this IKEA Rast Hack, and I needed (or at least really wanted) a miter saw to make it happen.

And that's when I fell in love.
I think a lot of women are nervous about the miter saw, but there's no reason to be. Just follow the instructions and keep your fingers clear of the blade. It's the tool I use the MOST in my collection, and I highly recommend investing in a good one!
Miter Saw Tip: when the weather's nice, use it outside instead of in the garage. Sawdust all over the garage is no fun to clean up! And if you can't work outdoors, a Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum is a DIY girl's best friend.
And if you want life to be really easy, invest in a mobile miter saw stand once you know you'll use your saw often. It makes getting the saw out and putting it away SO simple!
3. Circular Saw
A circular saw is wonderful for cutting larger boards that won't fit on your miter saw. I was probably most nervous about this one, since it relies entirely on your hands to keep it from zipping away. But I've used it many, many times now and love it for certain projects.

It's a huge lifesaver when you want to add shelves to a closet.
Since writing this post, I've bought a Ryobi circular saw, and it's my go-to! It's so easy to handle, and I love that it's cordless! It's perfect for a cut or two when I don't want to drag out my miter saw.
And here's a secret: pair your circular saw with this tool and you'll cut straight lines every time!
4. Kreg Jig
A Kreg Jig is essential for building sturdy joints! The first time I used one was to build my farmhouse dining table. I've used it many times since, including for these 10 Amazing Kreg Jig Projects.

I hope to build some simple wall bookshelves for my girls' rooms with it. Whenever you're joining pieces of wood together, this tool is a DIYer's best friend!
5. Cordless Brad Nailer
This tool sat on my wish list for WAY too long, and now that I have a cordless brad nailer, I can't imagine life without it! It's perfect for beginner projects like adding wall trim molding or beadboard!

It's such a great addition to your toolkit!
Bonus Tool: A Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum
I can't believe I made DIY projects for years without a shop vacuum. It's probably at the top of my must-have list for any DIYer.
It's so nice to keep my workspace tidy as I go, and my garage has never looked better! I highly recommend getting this “tool” sooner rather than later!
