The “Go Big or Go Home” Rule of Decorating

Over the years of decorating my own space, making plenty of mistakes and learning from them, I've come to live by the rule of “go big or go home.”

I used to walk into a store and buy all the little tchotchkes because they were cheap. I'd get a little boost of happiness and add them to my decor stash. Yay!

But what did that mean for my home? It meant a mantel full of tiny knick-knacks, or a wall of little frames scattered everywhere. Let me show you an example:

Old master bedroom has tiny little frames on the wall. It needs something much bigger!

Oh my! The scale is so off. Instead of investing in one large piece of art, I chose small frames spread across the wall because they were inexpensive.

Thankfully, I eventually realized those frames weren't right for this large wall above the bed. I made a large headboard and added a big piece of art above the bed to fill the space far better!

Hang Are Above a Bed

Since those early days of decorating, I've learned a lesson or two about proportion and scale. And yes, size does matter.

A large statement piece makes the biggest impact and looks best when decorating your home. That's the “Go big or go home!” rule. Simple, right?

Large wall decor doesn't have to be expensive, either. It can be super inexpensive, like my large abstract art that I made myself. Check it out here. So take a look at these amazing ideas from some amazing women and get to decorating!!

Large DIY Wall Decor Ideas

I've gathered several ideas from my blog and from other bloggers so you can get inspired to create beautiful DIY wall decor in your home!

1. Large Gallery Wall with Family Photos or Memorabilia

The most popular way to decorate a large wall is to create a gallery wall. I've built several gallery walls in my home and am working on another one right now!

You can gather every frame in your home, plus pick up thrift store finds for cheap, for an eclectic look. Just make sure you have enough frames or other wall decor to fill the space and make a big impact together.

Or you can buy all the same size frames for a more streamlined gallery wall.

11. Oversized Wall Art with DIY Wooden Signs

I'm a huge fan of taking a cheap piece of plywood or other wood and turning it into large pieces of art!

I used a piece of plywood and some faux shiplap pieces to create this reversible Christmas sign for my living room mantel above the fireplace. One side has a “Farm Fresh Christmas Trees” stenciled sign.
