For a bold living room, I really recommend painting the walls Hale Navy. This rich, gorgeous color looks distinguished and stately, yet still feels warm and inviting.

If you recall, I hadn’t planned to tackle the living room this quarter (beyond maybe a fresh coat of paint), according to my home goals. But the curtains for my office makeover are taking longer than expected, so I’m diving into the living room early.

It’s actually more than halfway done, but I want to share things in order, so let’s begin with the living room mood board.

This room is smaller than our last living room, which had very tall ceilings and an open floor plan. This one feels more enclosed, but it has 9-foot ceilings, a stunning wall of windows, built-in bookshelves and two large doors on the other walls. Although it’s a bit more closed in, plenty of white trim keeps it feeling airy.

With all the windows, built-ins and open doorways, I figured it was the perfect place for a bold blue. Hale Navy has been a favorite of mine for ages, so that’s the shade I picked for this navy living room.

The palette is white, navy and wood tones, giving it a bit of a coastal feel, though not so much that it wouldn’t suit a living room in northern Alabama.

The Furniture We Brought Along

Most of the furniture on my vision board came with us from our old house. I’ve included a few photos below of how it looked right after we moved in.

We bought the PB Comfort sectional before we ever saw this house, so I’m thrilled it fits so well. The vintage-style rug works nicely too, as do the Everett console table and beachcomber baskets behind the sofa.

My plan is to take down the blinds and hang white IKEA curtains on the window wall. The blinds seem to block light even when they’re open. I also want to clear away anything that interrupts our view of the private, wooded backyard beyond the screened-in back porch.

Eventually I’ll replace the ceiling fan, but it will stay for now. I also plan to turn the TV cabinet on the right side of the fireplace into a match for the bookshelf on the left. Since the TV hangs above the mantel, we don’t need a full cabinet on that side.

Everything else comes down to painting the walls navy, adding accessories and a gallery wall, plus future purchases. A new ceiling fan, a coffee table and two swivel chairs in place of the leather chair will come later.

For now, here’s what I’m doing:

  • Coat the walls in Hale Navy
  • Take down the blinds
  • Hang white curtains
  • Hang a gallery wall behind the sofa
  • Style the bookshelves
  • Hang the TV on the wall
  • Style the console table behind the sofa with lamps and decor
  • Place my mirror & decor on the console table against the back wall

Phase Two Plans:

I have more ideas for this living room, but they don’t fit the budget right now. I want to bring this room to a good stopping point, then move on to the dining room and my girls’ bedroom. These items will probably wait until next year!

  • Swap the ceiling fan for one that suits my style better
  • Build or purchase a coffee table
  • Add two swivel chairs (in the spot where the leather chair sits now)
  • Hang some art on the wall to the right of the mantel
  • Add end tables beside the sofa
  • Paint the built-in cabinets & trim in Simply White

That’s the plan for the navy living room! It’s quickly becoming my favorite room in the house, which surprises me. I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy it as much as the living room in our old house. But the lovely view from the sofa, the gorgeous built-ins and the cozy feel have made it a real pleasure to spend time in.

Our family spends a lot of time in here, so it’s wonderful to have a room we love. I can’t wait to show you the blue walls next! They look stunning and completely changed the feel of the room.

Do you love your living room? If not, how would you change it?
