Searching for ways to dress a mantel with a TV mounted above? Explore 10 easy, attractive ways to style your fireplace mantel while keeping the television…

TV above the mantel decor

Lots of homeowners find it tricky to decorate a mantel when a TV hangs over the fireplace. The screen tends to steal the spotlight, so people often wonder how to dress the mantel and still have a lovely room!

Good news: styling a mantel with a TV overhead doesn't have to look awkward or feel like a chore. Combine varied heights, textures, balance, and seasonal accents, and you'll have an attractive centerpiece that works with your television rather than fighting it. Hooray!

Here, I'm sharing my top mantel decorating ideas for a TV above the fireplace, plus practical lessons I've picked up from dressing my own mantel across the seasons.

For years I avoided the idea of mounting a TV over a mantel. Yet when we moved into our current home, that was the only spot that worked for the TV in our living room!

Luckily, by then the Frame TV had arrived, and it changed the game for decorators. The long-running dilemma of whether a TV belongs above a mantel more or less disappeared. Because this set shows artwork when it's idle, it transforms how you decorate around a television.

Even without a Frame TV, though, there's plenty of inspiration below. You'll learn how to style your mantel around any large television!

How to Dress a Mantel When a TV Hangs Above It

The most effective approach to a mantel with a TV overhead is low-profile decor that complements the screen instead of upstaging it. Sounds reasonable, right?!

Stacking greenery, candlesticks, vases, artwork, seasonal touches, and decorative objects brings balance and keeps the mantel looking good. We won't use ALL of these at once, but I'll show you how to mix and match them!

The main takeaway: keep it simple. When you're working around a big black box, too many accessories will swamp the space, so less really is more. Before we get to inspiration, here are a few basics to keep in mind.

  • Vary the heights
  • Bring in natural materials
  • Keep decor beneath the TV's bottom edge (mostly!)
  • Aim for symmetry where you can
  • Don't overcrowd the mantel
  • Swap out seasonal accessories

Let's look at a few of these ideas:

  1. Place low, linear pieces beneath the TV and flank the sides with bigger, taller items of differing heights. Those side pieces can mirror each other or not, but there's no need to go overboard. A plain lantern, vase, or sprig of greenery does the job nicely!
  2. Mount sconces on each side of the TV for easy symmetry. If you can't hardwire them, use a battery-powered bulb or candle. Otherwise, have an electrician wire the lighting in.
  3. Choose a smart TV that shows art, such as the Samsung Frame TV, and put a frame around it!
  4. Conceal the TV entirely. If you'd rather not see it at all times, build something to cover it.

1. Switch to a Smart TV That Shows Art

Moving to a smart TV with an art mode is one of the best ways to make a set feel deliberate instead of obtrusive over a fireplace. With the Samsung Frame TV, you no longer face a large black screen when it's off. You can show artwork, family photos, landscapes, or seasonal pieces that blend right in with your decor.

That lets the TV work like a framed painting, so it complements your mantel rather than competing with it. If you want a striking focal point all year, an art TV gives a more unified, designer-style look while still doing everything a regular television does.

An art-displaying TV is the BEST choice for dressing a mantel with a TV. It may be out of reach for some budgets, so watch for a sale like Amazon Prime Day. Then you won't need much extra decor, because the artwork does the work!

Styling Tip: Combine an art-showing TV with a decorative frame, and match the artwork's colors to your mantel accessories for a more unified look. This is one of my favorite ways to let a TV blend into a room's design. It also helps to conceal the TV cords inside the wall!

2. Stay Simple and Clutter-Free

When a TV already commands attention, less usually works better. A handful of carefully picked accessories (or wall sconces) adds interest without swamping the room. A streamlined mantel lets every piece stand out while keeping things clean, unified, and calm.

For most of the year, my mantel is refreshingly plain. I usually lean on greenery, a few anchor pieces, and seasonal details instead of covering every inch.

Simplicity shines especially when your TV is already big or hung close to the mantel. Rather than filling every inch, pick one or two statement pieces that suit the room. A pair of sconces, a basic garland, or a few candlesticks often makes a bigger impression than a crowded mantel.

3. Maximalist Style

A maximalist approach can actually make a black TV fade into the background by surrounding it with layers of color, texture, artwork, and collected pieces. So this is a great pick if you don't have a Frame TV! Rather than hiding the set, this strategy treats it as just one part of a rich, eye-catching display.

When your eye has several places to land, such as art, candlesticks, greenery, vintage finds, and personal accessories, the TV naturally melts into the scene. This works especially well in traditional, farmhouse, cottage, grandmillennial, and collected-home styles, where abundance and personality are part of the look.

In this example, Thrifty Decor Chick placed a low, linear decorative wooden tray with topiaries on each side, plus candle sconces and a basket overhead! Her walls are also covered in shiplap. This is the most I'd add around a TV, but it looks lovely and it works!

Styling Tip: Mix up the heights, textures, and finishes of your pieces, and repeat a few colors across the display. That creates a cohesive, curated feel instead of clutter, letting the TV recede into the background.

4. Soften the Stark TV With Greenery

Greenery is one of the simplest ways to dress a mantel with a TV, since it takes the hard edges off the screen. Whether you choose eucalyptus garlands, olive stems, magnolia leaves, or whatever is in season, natural elements make the focal point feel more relaxed and inviting.

My Christmas decor always features a swag of greenery below the mantel, along with chinoiserie pots and boxwood topiaries on either side of the TV. This lush foliage makes the set look less dominant and more like part of the decor. Even without a Frame TV, the television wouldn't be the star with this much greenery around it!

Any kind of garland beneath the TV can create this effect, such as evergreen in winter and eucalyptus in spring and summer!

5. Style for Symmetry

Symmetrical styling brings balance and order, which helps a big TV that already grabs attention. Pick matching lamps, candlesticks, lanterns, or vases for each side of the mantel to anchor the television and make the whole fireplace wall look deliberate and refined.

I adore the way Tamara at CitrineLiving dresses her TV over the mantel with small cordless lamps, a display box, and a marble knot beneath it. It's simple, balanced, and just right, particularly with all the decor in the built-in bookshelves on each side.

Style Tip: If you're fortunate enough to have built-in bookshelves beside the fireplace, use them to create balance and symmetry around the TV. No built-ins? That's fine! Freestanding bookcases or floating shelves on each side of the television can give a similar look. They anchor the TV visually and offer extra room for books, greenery, and decorative accessories, making the whole wall feel cohesive and purposeful.

6. Frame the Screen

Putting a frame around your television immediately makes it look like an intentional design feature instead of a gadget. A decorative frame softens the screen's harsh edges and ties the TV to the room's style, whether your home is traditional, farmhouse, cottage, or transitional.

Making the TV look like framed artwork helps it sit more naturally among the mantel pieces and creates a unified focal point above the fireplace. This small upgrade can make even an ordinary black TV feel custom and upscale without a full room makeover.

How to Frame the TV With a Simple Frame

Of course, you can buy a frame made for a Frame TV. But what if your TV is a different model? You can build a frame for it! It upgrades any TV.

I actually built this frame for my Frame TV because none of the ones on the market appealed to me. It really elevates the look. You can do this with any TV out there! If you'd rather skip the DIY, you can purchase ready-made frames for a Frame TV.

Styling Tip: Pick a frame finish that matches other finishes in the room, like wood tones, brass accents, or painted trim. A frame that repeats your existing decor will make the TV look like it was always meant to be there.

7. Stack Candlesticks and Lanterns

Candlesticks and lanterns add height and interest without upstaging the TV. Their vertical shapes lead the eye upward and help bridge the gap between the mantel and the screen. They also bring warmth and coziness to a room, even when unlit.

8. Work In Seasonal Decor

The mantel is one of the simplest spots in your home to refresh for each season. Trading a few accessories lets you freshen the room without redoing the whole space. Seasonal touches such as greenery, pumpkins, flowers, or holiday accents keep the fireplace looking current and inviting all year.

I tucked glass fair isle trees, books, and brass candlesticks into the corners of the mantel. They add decorative interest without blocking the view for anyone who wants to watch TV.

9. Style With Books

Books are among my favorite decorating tools since they add color, texture, and height all at once. Stack a few coffee table books flat or slip vintage volumes between decorative objects to build layers and give the mantel a thoughtfully collected feel. They also help bridge the gap between larger pieces and the TV above.

Style Tip: Books bring instant character, color, and depth to a mantel display. Stack them flat to lift smaller decorative objects, or use them to add subtle color and texture. They also create a curated, gathered-over-time look that keeps a mantel from feeling too staged.

10. Blend Decor Objects and Cherished Finds

A mix of decorative accessories adds depth and tells the story of your home. Pairing meaningful pieces like antiques, travel souvenirs, pottery, or heirlooms keeps the mantel from looking like a showroom. These personal touches balance the tech overhead with warmth and character.

I adore everything about Eric Ross's designs, so I had to include this screenshot from a video of his personal home at Boxwood Hill. He layers personal items like plates, books, and candlesticks onto the mantel and still keeps the TV usable. That's classic Eric Ross style!

Styling Tip: Combine old and new pieces, and vary the heights, textures, and finishes of your decor. The loveliest mantels usually hold a few sentimental treasures that spark memories alongside accessories that add balance and structure.

BONUS TIP: Hide It Away

If you really dislike having a TV on display, hide it! Try barn doors, a removable piece of art, or a screen to conceal it when it's not in use.

Mantel Decor With a TV: What You Need to Know

Before you start styling your mantel, keep a few key factors in mind:

  1. TV Size Matters: Avoid picking decor that's too small for your television. A big TV becomes the focal point on its own, so tiny accessories can get lost beneath it. Choose larger pieces such as sturdy vases, lanterns, oversized candlesticks, or fuller greenery garlands to balance the screen. The bigger the TV, the more deliberate you need to be about scale. But don't skip the next point…
  2. Consider the Viewing Angle: Keep tall objects out of the line of sight in front of the screen, and avoid decor that pokes into the viewing area. Low-profile accessories usually work best. Remember, the goal is to enhance the space around the television, not to compete with the set itself.
  3. Prioritize Fireplace Safety: If your fireplace works, keep the TV and any flammable decor a safe distance from the heat source. Follow your local rules and the TV maker's guidelines for mounting near a working fireplace. Lovely decor is never worth a fire hazard.
  4. Match Your Decorating Style: The most successful mantel designs with a TV above the fireplace feel like a natural continuation of the rest of the room. Traditional homes often look lovely with symmetrical arrangements, candlesticks, antique books, and classic artwork. Farmhouse spaces suit lanterns, wood accents, and simple greenery. Coastal homes can bring in driftwood tones, woven textures, and soft blues. Transitional rooms work well with a blend of classic and modern pieces, and cottage-style homes shine with layered collections, florals, and vintage-inspired accessories.

My Easy Formula for Styling a Mantel With a TV Above It

If you've ever stared at a bare mantel wondering where to start, you're not alone! Over time I've relied on the same simple formula over and over. Whether I'm dressing my mantel for spring, summer, fall, Christmas, or ordinary days, this method gives me a balanced look without overthinking it.

1. Begin With an Anchor Piece (or Two!)

Every attractive mantel needs a solid base. I like to start with one or two larger items that anchor the corners and give the eye somewhere to rest. That might be a pair of lanterns, oversized candlesticks, a large vase, ginger jars, or another substantial decorative piece.

These anchors set the scale of the display and keep smaller accessories from looking scattered.

2. Bring In Greenery

Next, add something natural. Greenery instantly softens the hard lines of both the mantel and the TV while bringing texture and life to the display.

Depending on the season, you might use one eucalyptus garland, olive stems, magnolia leaves, potted plants, boxwood topiaries, or simple faux greenery woven through the display. Greenery often pulls everything together and makes a mantel feel complete. I adore the boxwood topiaries on either side of my TV!

3. Layer in Decorative Objects

Once the base is set, add a few smaller pieces to build depth and personality. Sometimes I layer in stacked books, framed family photos, decorative boxes, antique finds, or keepsakes collected over the years.

The trick is to vary heights, textures, and shapes while leaving some breathing room between objects. A mantel doesn't need to be packed to look finished. I keep things very simple, with just a couple of extra items beyond my anchors and greenery.

4. End With Seasonal Touches

Last, add a few seasonal accents to keep the mantel feeling fresh all year. This is the fun part, where you can change the look easily without starting over.

In fall I might add pumpkins or dried stems. In summer I love patriotic accents or fresh greenery. At Christmas, I simply layer in evergreen garland, ornaments, ribbon, or twinkling lights.

Keep your anchors and base decor in place, and just a few seasonal swaps will completely refresh the space.

The Secret to a Well-Balanced Mantel

The best mantel ideas with a TV aren't about filling every inch. They're about building layers, mixing textures, and letting the television feel like part of the overall design. Start with an anchor, add greenery, layer in meaningful decor, and finish with seasonal touches. It's a simple formula that works beautifully year after year.

Common Questions:

What Size TV Works Best Above a Mantel?

It depends on how wide your mantel is. Don't buy a TV wider than three-quarters (3/4) of the mantel's width. Ideally, the TV should be no wider than two-thirds of the mantel. So, if your mantel measures 76 inches across, choose a TV about 50 inches wide.

Where Should Sconces Go Beside a TV?

When you hang sconces above the mantel, factor in the width of both your TV and mantel. Center each sconce in the gap between the TV's edge and the mantel's edge. For height, line them up with the top third (one-third) or the middle of the TV. Keep them 8-12 inches away from both the mantel edge and the TV.

How Can You Make a TV Above a Fireplace Look Better?

Add mantel decor, paint the wall a deeper color, install a Frame TV, or add built-ins so the television blends into the room's design.

Does Mantel Decor Need to Be Symmetrical?

Not always. Symmetrical setups give a traditional feel, while asymmetrical styling tends to look more relaxed and collected.

How High Should a TV Hang Above a Fireplace Mantel?

Ideally, the bottom of the TV should sit a few inches above the mantel while staying comfortable to watch from your seats. If you can, avoid mounting it so high that people have to crane their necks for long stretches. If necessary, use an adjustable mount so you can lower it later.

Closing Thoughts on Styling a Mantel With a TV

Over the years I've styled our mantel in dozens of ways for every season. Decorating around a TV can feel tough at first, but I've learned it doesn't have to cramp your creativity. Whether your taste runs simple and classic or layered and collected, a few thoughtful choices can help your television blend beautifully into the room.

Most of all, remember that your mantel doesn't need to look like a magazine cover to be beautiful. Start with a few pieces you love, try out different arrangements, and create a fireplace focal point that feels welcoming to your family and guests.

Do you have a TV above your mantel? If so, what's your favorite way to decorate around it?
