Confession time: I'm a lip balm lover. I mean, every night before bed I have to have some lip balm, and pretty much every hour after I wake up until I go back to bed the next night. It's just my thing. I hate having dry lips.
So when I found out a couple of years ago that I could make my own lip balm (and for dirt cheap), I started making it. I've tried all kinds of fabulous flavors, like cinna-mint, lavender, lime & vanilla and more.
Then my sister-in-law gave me some DIY lip balm she made, and it was yummier and more luxurious than any of my previous lip balm attempts.
Mine were good, but they weren't blow-your-mind moisturizing like this one was. And did I mention it was chocolate??? YUM!
So recently, armed with her recipe, I gathered all the special ingredients to make my own. I ordered mine from Amazon or Bulk Apothecary, but your local Whole Foods or Earth Fare will probably carry most of the ingredients, except for the essential oils.
While those stores do carry essential oils, since you'll be putting them on your lips, I really wouldn't recommend using anything but therapeutic-grade essential oils. I use this brand.

- 1/8 tsp. vitamin E oil
- 6 drops of peppermint essential oil

How to Make Cocoa-Mint Lip Balm
1. Gather Your Ingredients
First, gather all the ingredients for your cocoa mint lip balm recipe. You'll need everything on the ingredients list, including beeswax pellets, coconut oil, cocoa butter, honey, peppermint essential oil, and so on, plus a double boiler set. You can find most of these at your local grocery store or online.
2. Melt Beeswax, Cocoa Butter and Oil in a Double Boiler
Once you have everything, start by melting a tablespoon each of beeswax pellets, cocoa butter and coconut oil on low in your double boiler. Wait until they melt, stirring occasionally.
3. Add the Rest of the Ingredients
Remove the double boiler from the heat and whisk in the raw honey, vitamin E oil and cocoa powder. Make sure the honey and vitamin E are thoroughly mixed in.
4. Add the Peppermint Essential Oil
Finally, add your peppermint essential oil and stir until well combined. You can add more or less peppermint oil depending on your preference.
5. Pour into Lip Balm Containers
Keep stirring or whisking until you've finished pouring, because you don't want to reach the end of the mixture and realize all your honey and vitamin E have sunk to the bottom and are still sitting in your cup. Ask me how I know.
I bought this lip balm filling tray & set, and it works great for filling a bunch of containers at once.
I poured my lip balm mixture into a glass Pyrex measuring cup, so it was easy to pour into each lip balm tube.
Be sure not to touch them while they cool, because you don't want to mess up the pretty sheen on top.
