Homemade All-Natural Body Butter Recipe

Find out how to make homemade all-natural body butter with just a few ingredients and a little time. Your skin will thank you!

I’ve been wanting to share this amazing homemade body butter recipe with you all for a while. You see, I’ve never been a lotion person. I just don’t love feeling sticky or greasy, I guess.

Sure, there are times you need lotion, like after shaving your legs. Otherwise I’ve never really loved lotions or body butters.

Except in winter. My skin gets very dry then, and for every winter I can remember, my hands have been dry and cracked, sometimes even bleeding. Not fun! I’ve tried all kinds of lotions to keep my hands from drying out and cracking, and some work better than others, but nothing compares to this homemade body butter recipe.

I especially love this body butter because I can use it on my girls without worrying about putting harsh chemicals on their delicate skin. I love using the lavender version on them after bath time, right before bed, because it calms them down and helps them sleep soundly! Yay!!

It’s so simple to make. It yields a lot, and a little goes a long way, so it lasts a good while. The first batch I made was about 10 months ago, and I’m only now getting close to running out.

What I have left will probably last me another 6 months! Seriously.

Oh, and my husband uses it on his hands every night too, since they get dry in winter, and he loves it!

What You Need for Homemade All-Natural Body Butter

  • 1 cup organic shea butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup almond oil or jojoba oil (I’ve used both and prefer almond, but jojoba works well too.)
  • 30 drops of essential oil of your choice. (Not all essential oils are created equal, and I only use and recommend Young Living.)

Steps for Making All-Natural Body Butter

1. Combine the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler (or an improvised one, like mine) and heat until melted.

2. Let it cool for 30-40 minutes.

It should still be warm and softly melted.

3. Stir in the almond or jojoba oil and essential oils.

I start with 30 drops and add more to taste. I split the mixture into two bowls, making lavender in one and stress away in the other. Unfortunately, by the time I finished the stress away batch, I couldn’t smell the oil anymore. I’m sure it still has a calming effect when I use it, but I miss the scent I love. Sad face.

4. Place the bowl in the freezer for 20-30 minutes, until fairly firm.

I left mine in a little longer and it got rock solid. I should have pulled it out a bit sooner.

5. Whip the firm mixture with your stand mixer for 5-8 minutes, until it reaches the consistency of butter.

Scrape down the sides now and then with a spatula, and keep whipping until everything is blended.

6. Spoon it into a container and enjoy!

I use glass jelly jars from Hobby Lobby, but any plastic or glass container will work. I prefer glass, though it isn’t required.

Keep it in a cool, dry spot and enjoy!

I keep mine in the bathroom, and even with showers and the occasional small space heater, the body butter stays solid. It melts quickly once I start applying it.

It feels wonderful on my skin, and I love that I’m nourishing it with lovely oils instead of harsh chemicals.
