Welcome to my classic cranberry red Christmas living room, full of gold accents and traditional style! I've never gone this traditionally red with my decor, so it was time to embrace the favorite color of the season.

I'll be honest, red hasn't been my favorite color to decorate with. I even wrote a post a few years ago about how to decorate for Christmas without using red. Ha!

But the classic color scheme has slowly but surely made its way into my holiday decorating. There's something joyful about the punchy cranberry hue that makes me smile and says we're ready for Santa!

Last year I really embraced my favorite color and did an all blue Christmas. I loved the look and will most likely go back to it again soon.

A few years ago, though, I started working reds into my decor with some pretty plaid bedding and some plaid ribbon on the tree. It really was lovely. That nostalgic tree was so much fun to decorate with my girls.

I don't change too much about the decor in the rest of my home each year, but I love switching up the color themes in my living room. So this year it was all about deep reds, bright pops of cherry, and even some dusty mauve hues.

When I saw these beautiful mulberry velvet ornaments and this mauve velvet ribbon, I knew I wanted a velvet, luxe vibe with my materials.

I love sharing fun ways to decorate a home for the holidays. I've shown you how to add garland to a staircase and how to decorate the kitchen for Christmas. This year I added a new post all about Christmas card holders. I hope these posts inspire you to create a home you love!

Plans for Red Christmas Decor in the Living Room

It's so fun to take elements I've used in the past and add a few new pieces for a completely different look! Here's the design board for the room. I find it helps me plan and buy for a space when I can see it all together first! (Learn how to create your own design board!)

I always start with the tree decor and buy a few new rolls of ribbon and ornaments. I reused the same white and gold ornaments I've had for years, but I bought all new red ornaments because I didn't have any. These flocked red ornaments came in a pack of 6 and were only $10!

Once I've settled on a color theme, I start looking for the perfect coordinating wrapping paper. I found the winterberry gingham, watercolor nutcracker, and green plaid paper at a small shop! It's perfect for my tree!

It's been so fun to see how everything comes together as I decorate the tree. I've arranged some of the items together in the compilation below.

It's so different from anything I've done in the past, but it feels classic and sophisticated. I love it!

I've already ordered and wrapped a few gifts and placed them under the tree. I still have a lot of shopping left to do, but it's nice to know the gifts I have are ready to go! Ha! (If you're still shopping, feel free to check out my gift guides!)

Christmas Decor on the Mantel

I went with a traditional, symmetrical, double-swoop mantel garland on the fireplace. It's been my go-to for the past year or so, and it felt right to keep things classic this year. I've had this beautiful frame TV art for a few years, and I thought the pops of red worked well this year!

Mantel with traditional garland

You can find my tutorial, with a video, on how to put a garland on a mantel in this post. It's several garlands layered on top of each other. Then I add my bells and a ribbon bow to finish it off.

The stockings hang from hooks I screw into the underside of the mantel. I use a little ribbon to hang the stockings lower so they aren't blocked by the garland. Once Christmas is over, I take the hooks out, and you can't see any sign of the holes.

The Red, White and Gold Christmas Tree Decorations

Now let's move on to the Christmas tree, the star of the show! The tree decorating process I use is in this post from a few years ago. I love layering a tree collar with a tree skirt.

It had been a few years since I bought much new Christmas decor, so I went a little overboard this year. I bought a new red scalloped tree skirt, a bow tree topper, a few ornaments, and new ribbons. But I reused my old gold picks, gold and white ornaments, and basket tree collar.

I always start by choosing the ribbon color. These two red ribbons were a perfect place to begin, and then I found coordinating ornaments to go with them!

I even bought these clip-on candles that are controlled by a remote. I LOVE how much they add to the tree, and you can set them on a timer with the remote.

Holiday Media Cabinet Decor

On the back wall of the living room is a media cabinet. I keep my wood framed mirror there all year long and simply change up the decor around it. Then I add flocked trees in baskets for Christmas and winter, tied with a coordinating ribbon around the basket. My inexpensive nativity scene works perfectly back there this year.

I love mixing old and new pillows on the sofa each year, and I only bought three new pillows this year. The "Noel" pillow and green knit pillow are both pretty inexpensive. The red velvet pillow is nicer and the same quality as the green velvet pillows I already had. You can't go wrong with classic velvet Christmas pillows! They add such a luxurious texture to the room.

Behind the sofa is the console table I've had for years, and I simply add some of my favorite holiday frames and tie a bow to make things festive!

Simple Red, White & Gold Built-in Bookshelf Decor

I added some seasonal decor to my built-in bookshelf. The look is pretty simple, but I like how it turned out! It took me a few tries to get the pops of red right and find the perfect balance, but I love the result!

I already had a few picture frames with red and a red Santa, but I needed a few more colorful red decor pieces, like candles, ornaments, and bows! Most of it I already owned, so that's nice!

This is the same dough bowl I use for fall. I emptied out the pumpkins and hydrangeas and added pinecones, red ornaments, and bells, with some greenery for good measure.

Last year I hung mini juniper Christmas wreaths on the living room windows. This year I simply swapped the ribbon to match my decor, and they worked perfectly again! The whole wall is windows, so the wreaths add some festive decor to the otherwise plain panes.

Final Thoughts

I think that covers the whole living room! I'm so happy with how it looks, and I'm glad it's finished so we can enjoy the whole season. If there's a link I missed in the tour, feel free to ask in the comments below.

I hope that sharing our Christmas decor each year inspires you to create a home you love! I can't tell you how cozy the house feels now that the Christmas tree is up. I've definitely taken a few couch naps since it went up.

Now the girls and I will add some of our sentimental ornaments that we use each year. I take pictures before we do that, then let the girls have a free-for-all with the decor they like. It actually turns out pretty cute, too!

Thank you for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed the tour of my holiday decorations in the living room.

I don't plan to change too many other rooms this year. So if you'd like to see my other rooms decorated for Christmas, come take a look…
