I'm nothing if not a devoted fan of the best fake Christmas trees. Why? Well, I've never bought anything but an artificial tree for my home. I think my parents had real trees when I was a preschooler, but around age 5 or 6 they switched to artificial and never looked back.

I've been decorating with faux Christmas trees ever since I first decorated my apartment in college, so I've got a few years of experience under my belt. By the way, I'm allergic to the real thing, and so is one of my kids. Hence the "never been to a tree farm" life I live.

The "Viral" Twinkling Christmas Tree

This year I've noticed a lot of people getting this twinkling LED light Balsam Fir Christmas tree. It sold out really quickly last year, so people are snatching it up fast! I had to see what the fuss was about, so I grabbed a 7.5 foot slim unlocked version for my bedroom. It's so pretty and easy to assemble. I love that it connects to the center pole, so you don't have to fuss with plugging in each section. It also comes pre-fluffed, so it goes together quickly!

And if you've ever been torn between white and colorful lights, you don't have to choose anymore! The tree comes with a remote (and a foot pedal) so you can pick the lights you want in the moment. The branches look very realistic and beautiful! I'd highly recommend this tree if you're shopping for a new one this year.

A faux tree won't dim the holiday glow in your home at all. (And if you want the scent of a real tree, I highly recommend these "Tree Farm" candles, or the Good Tidings scent. Ahhh-mazing!!) Look for trees with hinged branches and "true needles" or "real feel" branches if you want the most realistic artificial Christmas tree.

Frequently Asked Questions for Decorating with an Artificial Christmas Tree

How to Fluff My Christmas Tree?

If you've never bought a fake tree before, you may not know that fluffing is part of the process. You'll need to "fluff" each and every branch on the tree. What you pull out of the box isn't what you saw online. There's some zhuzhing involved.
It's not always the most comfortable job, since tree branches can be prickly and even sharp. Some people wear gloves. But I find that if I put lotion on my hands before fluffing, it keeps them from getting too roughed up.

How to String Lights on the Tree?

If you don't buy a pre-lit tree, you'll obviously need to add lights.
If you want to take on stringing your own lights, it's not hard, and I've shared the BEST way to string lights on a Christmas tree so it glows.
Always, always, always test your light strands BEFORE you put them on the tree. Nothing is worse than stringing lights on a tree only to find they don't work!

How Many Lights to Buy for My Christmas Tree?

For an unlit tree, the standard answer is 100 lights per foot. I like to go bigger and buy 200 lights per foot, then return what I don't use. I'd rather return some later (or use them on another tree) than stop in the middle of decorating to run to the store again. Learn how to string lights on a Christmas tree here!

Which is better: pre-lit or unlit Christmas tree?

Pre-lit is certainly easier at first, but eventually all the bulbs on a pre-lit tree burn out. Your options are to string new light strands or replace the bulbs on the attached strands. Unlit trees need to be strung with lights every year. You may get a few easier years out of a pre-lit tree, but in the end you'll be stringing your own lights either way!

Are Smart Plugs Worth It?

Absolutely! Smart plugs are one of the best companions for a lit Christmas tree, because nobody wants to crawl behind the tree every night to reach the outlet! I use Kasa brand smart plugs and label them for each tree, so pulling them out of storage and plugging them in is quick and easy!

Final Thoughts

Once you've finished choosing a tree and adding Christmas lights, it's time to put the holiday decorations on! Turn on some Christmas music, pour a cup of wassail, and fill the tree with beautiful ornaments and ribbon. I love decorating the tree with my daughters while we watch Christmas movies in the background.

Happy shopping! I hope you find the perfect tree for your home! I'd love to hear your thoughts on any of these trees in the comments below.
