Ribbon is one of my all-time favorite ways to decorate for Christmas! Pick up 7+ tips & tricks for adding Christmas ribbon to your holiday decor this year!
Today I am sharing some of my favorite ways to use ribbon. I keep every piece because you never know when a color will come back into style, or when you will want to switch things up. A stash of Christmas ribbon is so much fun to have. My advice: buy it, keep it, and use it every year!

I love talking about everything Christmas decor! I have covered the best artificial Christmas trees, how to decorate a bedroom for Christmas and how to add wreaths to kitchen cabinets. I hope these articles help you create a home you love for the holidays!

1. Ornaments Hung with Velvet Ribbon
Velvet ribbon brings such a rich, cozy feel to any decor, so I use it all over the house, especially to hang ornaments! Many ornaments come with rustic twine, but I like swapping it for velvet ribbon. My go-to is a thin velvet ribbon from Michael's, Etsy or Amazon.
The ribbon I reach for most:
- 3/8 inch velvet ribbon

This is a new way for me to use ribbon in my Christmas decor, and it is so much fun to hang ornaments from chandeliers. Right? Thin velvet ribbon works perfectly for the job.
Ornaments would look lovely hanging from ANYWHERE with velvet ribbon, don't you think?
2. Weave Ribbon into Garlands
Ribbon is a fun way to add a pop of color or another point of interest to your garlands.
The ribbon I reach for most:
- 1 1/2 inch Satin or Grosgrain Ribbon
- 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 inch Wired-edge Ribbon

I either tie a simple bow, like the one on my mantel garland, and leave the tails long and flowing. Or I make a larger bow from wired ribbon and let the tails curl, like the ones on my stair banister.

3. Ribbon on the Christmas Tree
Classic, right? Of course ribbon belongs on a Christmas tree! I actually know people who skip it entirely, and while I believe in doing you, I LOVE ribbon on a tree.
The ribbon I reach for most:
- Always wired ribbon, unless you are tying satin ribbon onto the branches
- 2 1/2 inch or wider wired ribbon
You can find my ribbon at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Amazon and Etsy.

I have shared more about how I put together my tree decorations, including how I cascade the ribbon through the branches, in this post. It is my favorite way to add a whole new layer of interest to the tree.

My favorites are plaid ribbons, buffalo check and solid velvet. When I want a more classic feel, I also reach for sparkly gold and red-and-white ribbon.

One quick tip for putting ribbon on your tree: do not be afraid to cut the roll! I like to cut mine into 2-3 foot lengths and weave them through the branches in small sections. Go ahead and cut it up!

4. Hang Wreaths from Cabinets with Ribbon
It has become a tradition of mine to hang a ribbon with a small wreath on the cabinet doors in my kitchen. I absolutely love the look, year after year.
Nearly any ribbon you already own will work for this project!
The ribbon I reach for most:
- 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 inch ribbon of any kind!

It is also so much fun to swap out the ribbon (and the wreaths) for a fresh look each year!
Of course, you can hang wreaths with ribbon all over your home, and it looks beautiful!

5. Dress Up Gifts with Ribbon
Tying ribbon around a gift is one of the quickest ways to upgrade your wrapping! Think of it as decorating your package. I like to add a small ornament or gift tag to the ribbon and call it finished!
The ribbon I reach for most:
- Any ribbon you have on hand!
This is a great place to use all of your favorite ribbons! I like to pick up ribbon at my go-to stores, like Amazon, Etsy, Michaels, Target or Hobby Lobby, for this kind of decorating.

As you will see, I mix ribbon, gift tags and embellishments on my packages. I love using all sorts of ribbon, and someday I will write a post about just my wrapping ideas. For now, here are some of the ways I have wrapped gifts in the past!

For embellishments, I use any leftover ornaments from that year. Sometimes I buy flat ornaments made specifically for gifts. I also love adding those simple wreaths (pictured below)!
Post-holiday sales are a great time to stock up on gift embellishments for next year at a bargain!

6. Tie a Christmas Ribbon Bow on a Wreath
Beyond hanging wreaths with ribbon, adding a ribbon bow to a wreath takes it to a whole new level!
The same goes for garland: you can use wired or non-wired ribbon to bring festive cheer to your wreaths!
The ribbon I reach for most:
- 1 1/2 inch Satin or Grosgrain Ribbon
- 1 1/2 or 2-inch Wired Ribbon

Keep it simple or go fancy, either way, a ribbon tied in a bow makes all the difference!

7. Dress Up Lamps with Ribbon
I used to tie ribbons into bows and put them on my lamps all the time, and I really miss it! I think it is time to bring this idea back!
I would use Christmas wired ribbon for this, just like the bows on the garland on my stairs.

Isn't that festive and fun?!
And it is an inexpensive way to bring cheer to any holiday decor.
