Freshen up your bedroom on a budget with one of these fabulous DIY headboard ideas! Thirteen different ways to get the look you love!
If you've had the same headboard since college, it's definitely time for a change. Most of us don't have a master bedroom that looks like the pages of a design magazine, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a little luxury here and there. Since the headboard is likely the biggest focal point in your room, it's a great place to start. And the best news: you can totally DIY a headboard on a budget.

Steps to Make a Headboard
If you're wondering how to make a beautiful headboard that looks like it came from Pottery Barn or somewhere equally fabulous, this pretty farmhouse headboard DIY is the one! It looks amazing but isn't a difficult project. I know because I made it myself!

Sometimes you need a quick fix, or you don't have the time or money to build something. This DIY headboard from In My Own Style is a brilliant way to use a curtain rod and a bedsheet to create a pretty focal point on your wall. It's also easy to swap out styles and patterns with the seasons, which is fun!

An upholstered headboard may seem like too big a project to tackle, but this DIY headboard from Lovely Etc. makes it feel very doable. I especially love how she personalized the fabric cover with handwritten Bible verses. What a wonderful reminder to see every day!

If you want a bed that looks like it came straight out of a West Elm catalog, you have to try this DIY headboard from Vintage Revivals. It cost her about $70 to make but looks like it cost much more.
This one calls for a few woodworking skills, but it doesn't seem too tough, and the result is totally worth the effort.

If you're after another modern option, I really like this idea from The Merry Thought. The basic idea is to take an engineer print of a meaningful image and use Mod Podge to attach it to a piece of plywood. The result is gorgeous!

This DIY headboard made me stop mid-scroll. It's gorgeous! I love how I Spy a DIY created this stunning herringbone wood headboard and explained how to make one yourself in a totally doable way. This one may have to go on my to-do list!

If you want a simpler project with a similar look, try this West Elm-inspired chevron wood headboard from Jen at The House of Wood. Isn't it gorgeous? She made the whole bed, not just the headboard, for less than $200. It isn't hard if you have basic tools and a little experience.

If you love a headboard with pretty diamond tufting, you're in luck! It always seems so difficult, but this post from Homemade By Carmona shows exactly how to create those tufts using the fabric of your choice. It's a lovely fabric headboard for anyone who wants a classic look.

My friend Aniko at Place of My Taste also tackled the traditional tufted headboard, giving it a modern spin with indigo velvet. Isn't it beautiful?

If you're short on time or want to try something beyond a traditional headboard, this is a really fun project. Sweet Team came up with a whimsical way to decorate the wall above her bed by stringing flowers for a playful, spring-friendly look.

You all know I LOVE turquoise (in case the blog name didn't give it away!), so I couldn't help thinking how cute this DIY headboard was. Little Bit Funky made a large woven pattern from long wood pieces and painted it a beautiful distressed turquoise. This project would be super cute in a country-style room.

A really fun way to learn how to DIY a headboard is to recreate this bright idea from A Beautiful Mess. It's inspired by a marquee sign and uses string lights to spell out words or phrases. You can spell anything you like and make it completely personal.

Sometimes the best way to make up for not having a headboard is to draw the eye with something eye-catching. A Kailo Chic life certainly did that with a gorgeous abstract wall art display mounted above a bed. With a piece this pretty, no one will notice the missing headboard!
