Lately I’ve been brainstorming new ways to use the pallets I keep in my garage. I’ve made several projects with them over the past two years, and I love having free wood on hand whenever I need some. But the pile in our garage keeps growing by the minute.

(We currently have a lawn mower situation: there are three out there, two riding and one push, and it’s getting a little claustrophobic.) I know I should just break down my pallets and use the space more efficiently, but hopefully without filling it with more mowers. So pallets have been on my mind lately.

Here’s a funny story. A couple of weeks ago I was picking up Miss A from preschool when my friend stopped me in the hall and asked where she could find free pallets to build a crate. As I was leaving the school, I spotted one on the side of the road, so I flagged her down.

Now, we’re both pregnant, and she’s due next week. So there we were, two pregnant women trying to wrestle the largest pallet I’ve ever seen into her SUV. I’m sure it was pretty entertaining to watch!

We couldn’t get it to fit, unfortunately. But her husband went back later and picked it up, and he built her a crate that same afternoon. So fun! What a sweet husband.

I know pallet projects have been done over and over again, but I doubt free wood will ever go out of style. Nothing beats free, rustic wood. Am I right?
