I adore monograms! This simple vinyl monogram is an easy beginner project. This tutorial walks you through everything you need to know for your first monogram vinyl project.

I’ve enjoyed using the basics of this tutorial to create a monogram printable or a monogrammed wreath!

Ever since I bought my Silhouette Cameo last spring, I’ve been itching to try cutting vinyl. So during their Black Friday sale, I finally bought the vinyl starter kit and a few other fun colors.

Since I’m new to vinyl, I thought I’d share my very first project in case there are other beginners out there! It wasn’t perfect, but I think the end result was worth it.

Part 1. How to Design a Monogram

Step 1. Grab the Monogram KK font from dafont.com.

Step 2. Install the Monogram KK font on your computer.

On my Mac, I opened my Downloads folder, selected the “Monogram KK” folder and chose “install font.” It installed automatically on my computer.

This will make it appear automatically in your font library in Silhouette Studio. If it doesn’t, close Silhouette Studio and relaunch it.

Step 3. Design your monogram in Silhouette Studio.

{Side note: for a married couple’s monogram, which is what I’m making here, you arrange the initials in this order: wife’s first name initial, married last name initial, then husband’s first name initial. So mine reads LNJ.}

The Monogram KK font creates a perfectly sized monogram when you type the outer initials in lowercase and the middle, larger initial in uppercase. So that’s what I did. Once you’ve typed them all out, the letters won’t overlap yet, which is exactly what we want for this project.

So, I ungrouped the letters and shifted them around until they overlapped just the way I wanted. {I know the side initials aren’t perfectly even, but I thought they looked best this way.}

Step 4. Weld the letters into one shape.

Once everything overlaps perfectly, weld the letters together. This joins and regroups them automatically, so you end up with a single design.

Isn’t she pretty? I was getting so excited at this point!

Step 5. Resize your monogram to fit your project.

I don’t think I mentioned yet that I was placing my vinyl on top of a frame, so it would be stuck to the glass. I made sure to measure the inside of the frame. Just because it’s an 8×10 frame doesn’t mean your design can be that big. I made mine about 7.5 x 9.5 because I wanted it to fill the frame.

I resized my monogram to the exact dimensions I needed, which made it a little narrower than the original.

Part 2. How to Cut Vinyl for a Monogram

Step 6. Cut your monogram with the Silhouette.

Now we’re ready to cut! This part is easy-peasy. I used a new cutting mat I had just ordered, because my old one isn’t very sticky and the vinyl kept curling up on it.

What you’ll need:
1. Vinyl <<— my go-to vinyl brand
2. Transfer Paper
3. Cutting mat
4. Hook
5. Scraper
6. Silhouette cutting machine <<— this bundle has everything you need to get started!

I cut my vinyl a little larger than my design and placed it on the cutting mat.

Then I simply loaded the cutting mat (make sure you select “load cutting mat,” not “load media” on the Silhouette).

Next I followed the vinyl settings in Silhouette Studio and clicked “cut.” Easy!

Step 7. Weed away the unneeded parts of the vinyl.

Then you simply peel away the vinyl that isn’t part of your design.

I used my new hook tool to pick out the small pieces of vinyl inside the design.

Now it’s ready to be transferred, which is the tricky part!

Step 8. Transfer your vinyl using transfer paper.

Cut a piece of transfer paper to the size of your design. (It comes on a roll and is pictured in my supplies photo.) Then peel off the backing, leaving a thin, sticky sheet. This is the tricky part: lay it sticky-side-down onto your design. Press the scraper over the whole design to make sure it’s well stuck.

You can see a few wrinkles across the top of mine. It was tricky to get it perfectly straight, but I did the best I could.

Then slowly peel the design away from its backing. You’ll now have the design {in reverse} stuck to your transfer paper. Your monogram decal is ready to be placed wherever you like!

I tried placing the design on the glass from my frame, but I couldn’t really see what I was doing. So I set the glass on top of the design instead, which worked much better.

Turn your frame over and press down on the design with the scraper. This makes sure it’s well stuck and removes any air bubbles. Then slowly peel away the transfer paper.

And voilà! Just like that, you have a pretty framed monogram. I placed a piece of white cardstock behind it as a backdrop. But I think it would look lovely in an empty frame with the wall color showing through, or with something fun like burlap or fabric behind it.

Let me know if you try it or have anything to add. As I said, this is my first vinyl project, so I know I still have a lot to learn. I’m a bit like the blind leading the blind. So, any vinyl experts out there, feel free to share your tips and tricks!!
