How to Get Ahead of Holiday Shopping

Get your pre-holiday shopping tips and ideas! I've even put together a holiday planner to help you feel prepared for the busiest season of the year!

I could have also titled this post: How Not to Miss the Good Holiday Finds!

I know, I know. It isn't even Halloween, and it feels like I've barely put away my fall home decor. But I'm sure you've already heard about the hottest decor items selling out this holiday season. The past few years, supply issues have affected how much inventory is out there.

So you'll want to be a bit more savvy and get a head start on your shopping. The best stuff always sells out in October anyway, so I thought I'd share a few things I'm doing to get the head start we need this season.

Wouldn't it be great to have all your shopping wrapped up early this year and skip the stress when the holidays arrive?

Top Holiday Decor Sell-Outs Every Year

Most holiday items are in stock right now, but they'll quickly sell out in late October to early November (if they haven't already). So if you know you want a new artificial tree or some kind of Christmas decor, it's time to shop NOW. I'm not kidding. Some things are already selling out.

I normally share my living room Christmas tree, pictured below. But it's so expensive this year, for some reason, that I don't know if I'd buy it until the price drops.

The Christmas Tree in my Living Room and tree collar sell out early every year!

Instead, I'd grab THIS Christmas tree, which sold out quickly last year and is set to sell out again! It's an LED twinkly light tree with both warm white and colorful light options. It's so easy to set up and comes in a ton of sizes and styles!

These are my most popular items from last year that will most likely sell out early.

  • ‘Feel Real’ Pre-lit Artificial Christmas Tree – This has been my tree in the living room 5 years ago and it is GORGEOUS! I can’t recommend it enough! (Note: it has increased in price quite a bit since I bought it. I paid about $450, so if you see it near that price, snag it!!)
  • Woven Tree Collar – This is my new favorite square one and will sell out quickly.
  • Scalloped Woven Tree Collar – I love this one, similar to one I own. It's a little pricier than the other one I just shared, but it's a good backup choice if the other one sells out!

  • Hanging Iron Bells – I have so many of these sets because they look so cute in a wreath or garland! I've used them for years in my mantel garland, and it looked so pretty! I've found them later in the season, but at much higher prices. Get them now while they're $40 or less! (I've found them even cheaper on Amazon lately, but they go in and out of stock. Check here and here.)
  • Real Touch Norfolk Pine Garland – I use this pine garland on my mantel, layered over some much cheaper garlands, and it looks gorgeous! I've seen it priced as high as $300 later in the season, so grab it at the lowest price now.

  • Pine Tree Reversible Towels – I bought these hand towels a few years ago for my powder bathroom, and they sold out before I could ever share them. I LOVE how they bring a hint of seasonal decor to the bathroom, and I'll use them all winter. Bonus: they're reversible!
  • Mercury Glass Adorned Ornaments – I had to hunt to find these in stock a few Novembers ago, so if you need quality ornaments, get these now! Add a few mini mercury glass ornaments in a bowl alongside them for a gorgeous display!

  • Stewart Plaid Duvet Cover and Pillow Shams – I have this plaid bedding in my bedroom and LOVE it! When I first bought it, the shams were out of stock, so I drove 2 hours each way to find one in a store. And I did it. LOL. Don't be like me. Order it now!
  • Enchanted Woods Plates & Mugs – I love setting a holiday salad plate at each place setting, or putting Christmas mugs at my coffee station during the holidays. They always sell out in November.
  • Tabletop Christmas Trees – I love having trees scattered all over my home during the holidays, and even through winter! Here's a $45 tabletop tree, plus a pre-lit faux burlap potted pine tree.

  • Mini Wreaths – I love adding mini wreaths to my kitchen cabinets or the backs of chairs. But they usually sell out quickly! These mini wreaths are so pretty and cute on a cabinet or hung in a window. There are even more beautiful mini wreath options too.

Get Inspired Early

If you're having trouble picturing Christmas decor right now, maybe because it's still 80 degrees where you live? My Christmas posts from last year may help spark some inspiration.

And remember, I'm not decorating yet. I'm just ordering what I want or need before it sells out or there are crazy shipping delays. I'll keep everything in a closet until at least November 1. (And I have to decorate early because it's my job.)

Stores to Watch Closely

One of the best ways to get ahead of sell-outs is knowing when stores release their inventory. Holiday stock typically isn't restocked, so once it's gone, it's gone! When I'm unsure about an item, I'll go ahead and buy it now and return it later if it doesn't work out. But most of the time, I wish I'd bought more!

  • McGee & Co. – I love their eclectic collection of seasonal decor. It's not all my style, but I always find myself adding a lot of their ornaments and wall decor to my cart! Most of their holiday line is available now. Shop my favorites HERE.
  • Target – We all know and love Target for its affordable and easily accessible decor. But the best stuff sells out quick.
    • Hearth and Hand with Magnolia has already released all of its holiday items!
    • Studio McGee Holiday Line has already released, and much of it is still in stock. Some pieces have sold out, but just select the "notify me when it's back" button and you'll get an alert if it returns to stock.
  • Brooke & Lou – This small business offers great, unique holiday decor. Their holiday line has already released, and once it's gone, it's gone! (PS: Some of their items are WAY overpriced in my opinion, but some aren't. There's NO way I'd pay $330 for a garland. But I'd pay $18 for a pine cone cluster, since it would cost me that much in materials and time to make one! And I'd pay $8 for a handmade large ornament.)
  • Pottery Barn – Another favorite store that sells out of decor early. Last year I saw items in October and never saw them again. So shop now!
  • Ballard Designs – I've been buying more and more from this store because its traditional style fits my home. I'm excited to browse their holiday store this year.
  • Cailini Coastal – Picture a Nantucket Christmas, and you'll see everything Cailini Coastal. I've loved some of their specialty items and ribbons!

Shopping for Others

As always, we need to start thinking about shopping for others on our lists too. I've got more than a dozen gift guides that I've kept adding to over the years. I'll be updating them more this week, but feel free to look around and get a head start on that shopping list!

Sources are telling us that shipping delays and product shortages will be a real issue this year. So go ahead and buy those gifts you already know you need!
