This navy living room centers on an oversized sectional, the ideal place for the whole family to gather. Navy walls with blue, pink and green accents, plus a nice mix of natural wood tones, give it a traditional, coastal, cozy feel!
I didn’t have this room on my radar when I first started making over our new home. Honestly, I hadn’t even considered it! But since we spend so much time in there, it just kind of happened!
I think it’s because I sat looking at the golden walls day after day and couldn’t wait a moment longer to paint them something else. Something blue and bold, like Hale Navy. The huge wall of windows, the white built-ins and the wide door openings made this room the perfect place for a bold paint color.
In case you need a reminder of where we started, these are the photos from the real estate listing. (You can see more “before” photos in my living room mood board post.)

My original mood board for the living room included this to-do list for a Phase 1 makeover:
- Paint the walls in Hale Navy
- Take down the blinds and hang white curtains
- Hang a gallery wall behind the sofa
- Style the bookshelves
- Mount the TV on the wall and conceal the cords
- Add lamps and decor to the console table behind the sofa
- Put my mirror and decor on the console table on the back wall
Next came my Phase 2 to-do list, which I mostly haven’t tackled yet. I went ahead and did the first two items because the room didn’t feel finished without them. The rest will have to wait for later down the road.
- Find something for the wall to the right of the built-in cabinet (I went with a faux fiddle leaf fig tree.)
- Add an end table to the right side of the sofa
- Replace the ceiling fan with one that suits my style better
- Build or buy a coffee table
- Add two swivel chairs (where the leather chair sits now)
- Paint the built-in cabinets & trim Simply White

We moved in back in December and set our furniture up in here, and this is how it looked. We lucked out with the sectional sofa, which we bought for our old house. Happily, it fits perfectly here. (I measured before we even looked at the house the first time.)
After 6 months of tweaking and working on things a little at a time, here is the finished living room makeover (phase 1):

I’m so happy with how it turned out! I feel so at home in here, and even though the girls have their own TV hangout space upstairs, they still prefer spending time in this room.
I’ll write a review of our sectional soon, but the bottom line is that we love it! All four of us can lounge on it and watch TV comfortably.

One of my favorite things in the room is the console table behind the sofa. I love this view from the kitchen, which is where we come into the house 99% of the time.
The white table lamps are one of my favorite purchases since we moved in. They give the perfect mood lighting at night, and they even have USB ports in the base, so we can charge our phones while we sit on the couch.
I always get asked how we have them plugged in right in the middle of the room. We lucked out with several electrical outlets in the floor. If you look closely under the left side of the console table, you can see the cords.

We reused the media console from our old house in this corner. We could probably get rid of it and leave the space empty, but I like how I can display my favorite mirror on it.
It still holds all of our old DVDs and photo albums. I think we could move that stuff to the cabinets beside the mantel, but we’ll leave it here for now.

The gallery wall to the left is another favorite spot in the room. (Can they all be my favorite spots? Have I mentioned how much I love how this room turned out?!) I bought these gallery frames for our old house, but they worked perfectly here. The wood frames really pop against the navy walls.

I also loved getting to decorate the built-in bookshelves. It makes me happy every time I walk over there.

It truly is our favorite room in the house (for now), and we use it every day. I’m so glad the sectional fits in here and works so well.

One view I haven’t shared much before is the one from our front door. It’s definitely my least favorite view of the room, but I love that you get a direct line of sight to our private backyard.

Taking down the blinds brightened the room so much. And I love the texture and softness the white curtains add.
I can’t get a photo that shows the backyard, but it’s a wooded, private yard. It has a screened-in porch just past the windows, then the yard and the woods.

It’s a really peaceful view from the sofa, so I love that I can sit on the couch and look out at the lush green grass and trees. Yet another favorite thing about this room, even if this view of the room isn’t my favorite.
I hope you enjoyed this tour of the living room makeover! I’m so glad it’s done, and now I can keep decorating the rest of the house. The office and the girls’ room are up next!
