Stop letting outlet covers stand out like a sore thumb against your painted walls! Meet painted outlet covers! Yes, they're a real thing, and I'll show you how.

Have you ever felt that a white or off-white outlet cover looked out of place on a painted wall? Painting it the wall color is a simple custom touch that elevates a room and brings a smile!

To be honest, painting an outlet cover never crossed my mind, until now! I'm in the middle of my dining room makeover, and I recently painted the lower trim in Oyster Bay. (A sneak peek at the dining room taking shape!)

It's a gorgeous green, and a white outlet looked odd against it. I think it bothered me more than it would on a flat wall because the paint sits on the lower third as trim.

I also recently painted the lower trim in my powder room, but I chose brass outlet covers there, so it never occurred to me to paint them to match the wall.

The white covers looked off to me against that green lower wall. There had to be a solution, right?

Painting Outlet Covers – the Easy Way!

At first I thought about priming the existing covers, but I was hesitant to paint the actual outlet where you plug things in. (I'm not technical enough to know its official name.)

So I went hunting and found these textured wall outlet covers that are marketed as paintable!

These textured wall outlet covers make painting outlet covers easy!

The package doesn't say "paintable," but the online listing does, so I went for it! The trick is that they cover your entire existing outlet and include a paintable screw, so none of the original white outlet shows.

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Paintable Outlet Cover
  • Paint – I used the same semi-gloss I'd used on my walls.
  • Paintbrush or roller
  • Screwdriver

Steps for Painting Outlet Covers

The process couldn't be simpler!

  • Start by removing the old outlet cover.
  • Paint the new textured cover and its screw.
  • Then screw it back into place!
Paint the outlet screw, too!

I applied two coats to my covers before installing them. Rolling the paint on would probably have been better, but my Purdy paintbrush was right there, so I used it.
