Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist

When I hear the name Balboa Mist, I picture a pale green or blue, something oceanic. Wrong again! Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist (OC-27) is a light gray. It proves that paint names can be misleading.

It's one of Benjamin Moore's most cherished colors. I haven't used Balboa Mist in my own home yet, but I think it would suit many spaces. It's easy to see why it's become a bestseller for the brand.

I've done the research and gathered everything you need to know about using Balboa Mist at home, including its undertones, how bright it really looks, the best colors to pair with it, and more.

So before you buy a sample pot for swatching and start painting like a pro, read through this review.

The Undertones in Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist

Benjamin Moore's Balboa Mist is clearly a warm gray. Traditional grays usually lean cool, with blue, green, or violet undertones. A warm gray, on the other hand, carries yellow or brown undertones.

Balboa Mist has a touch of beige plus a hint of violet, so its look shifts with the room's lighting.

That beige warmth comes through in rooms with warm lighting or plenty of daylight. In rooms with cool lighting or little natural light, it leans more toward gray.

The violet undertones sometimes break through, and some people say it can look like pale lavender under certain lights.

Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of Balboa Mist OC-27

Balboa Mist has an LRV of 67. If LRV is new to you, it's a measure interior designers use to gauge how much light a paint reflects. The closer to 100, the more light it bounces back. The closer to 0, the more it absorbs.

At 67, Balboa Mist sits in the medium range and suits most dark and light rooms. It may look a little washed out in a very bright room, where it could read as a soft white.

It's still deep enough to offer contrast in a room. It doesn't quite qualify as an off-white, since its color is clearly noticeable.

Keep in mind that the type of light bulbs you use will also change how the paint looks.

Which Colors Pair Well With Balboa Mist?

Balboa Mist looks great alongside darker grays and many shades of blue, which create a nice contrast. Since it rarely steals the spotlight, pair it with some bolder colors. Lean into the violet undertones and choose shades that share them.

I'd suggest avoiding a monochromatic look with Balboa Mist. Anything leaning slightly beige can look dull without bold, bright accents, so steer clear of whites with too much yellow. Other greiges or beiges with green-gray undertones, such as Revere Pewter, Edgecomb Gray, or Agreeable Gray, won't work well with Balboa Mist's violet-gray undertone.

But if you want a little contrast with Balboa Mist, try a deeper true gray such as Kendall Charcoal or Wolf Gray.

Which Trim and Ceiling Colors Work With Balboa Mist?

For trim with Balboa Mist, choose something with a fairly high LRV. White Dove gives softer contrast as a warmer white. For a bold white, Chantilly Lace is clean and bright. And if you love Sherwin Williams colors, try Pure White.

Personally, I love Simply White for trim and Chantilly Lace for ceilings in nearly every room.

Other Neutral and Greige Paint Colors Compared to Balboa Mist

Benjamin Moore Collingwood vs. Balboa Mist

Balboa Mist is often compared with Collingwood, since both are warm grays with violet undertones. They seem quite similar at first, and they are, until you place them side by side. That's when the real difference shows.

Collingwood is the deeper of the two. Its LRV of 62 means it's less likely to wash out in a bright room than Balboa Mist. Because Balboa Mist has the higher LRV, it may look slightly warmer.

So if your room is bright but you love Balboa Mist's undertones, Collingwood may be the safer pick to avoid washing out. A darker room, meanwhile, may suit Balboa Mist better.

Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist in Real Homes

Let's look at Balboa Mist in real homes! Use these examples for inspiration and to see how the paint might look in different settings.

Living Room

A living room or large space might be my favorite place for Balboa Mist. It looks wonderful in north-facing light and shifts subtly through the day as the sun rises and sets.

It keeps a room bright and cozy at the same time. It's versatile too, so you can mix all sorts of furniture, fabrics, and colors alongside it.

Bathroom

For a brighter bathroom, pair Balboa Mist with crisp whites. Skip yellowed porcelain, trim, and towels to keep the space looking clean and fresh.

Pair Balboa Mist with other grays for a more masculine bathroom look. You can also play with its undertones through the tile, matching the violet with veining in the stone.

Kitchen

In the kitchen, I like to keep things neutral so your countertops, cabinets, backsplash, and floors take center stage. Balboa Mist happily sits in the background and lets everything else shine.

You can coordinate it with your countertops and stone, or even use it as a cabinet color.

Bedroom

I can easily picture Balboa Mist in a guest bedroom. It creates a neutral yet cozy, warm design. Pair it with crisp white bedding and warm wood furniture for a welcoming space that guests of every kind will love.

Dining Room

Dining rooms often go unused in daylight, so you'll likely rely on added lighting for atmosphere. In that setting, the color delivers the true warm gray it promises.

Add a warm wood dining table, an elegant chandelier, and a few accent colors, and you'll have a comfortable, elevated space for entertaining.

Closing Thoughts on Balboa Mist

Balboa Mist isn't your typical gray. At times it leans beige, and at other times it reads as a light gray. Sometimes you may even catch a flash of violet.

Balboa Mist won't suit everyone, and no paint does. Still, it's very versatile. It pairs with most colors and works in both light and dark rooms. It's hard to go wrong with warm neutrals.

I think it's a great choice for a space you want to feel cozy in while still keeping it light.
