Great mudroom ideas are essential for taming the chaos of backpacks, lunch boxes, papers and more! A well-planned mudroom really can change everything about a home.
A good mudroom or drop zone can make or break how well the home’s entrance and exit points work. Without a place for important items and everyday essentials, it’s hard to keep the rest of the house clean.
Yet the mudroom is one of the first things you see when you walk in, so it deserves to be beautiful too. I’ve gathered examples of mudrooms that are both attractive and practical, and I hope they inspire you to create your own!
My Mudroom Space
In my own eat-in kitchen, I had to build a “mudroom” out of a tiny strip of wall and a wall of windows! There was very little space to work with, but I made it happen!
I added a row of hooks, a mirror with cubbies and a wall calendar. It sits right in our eat-in kitchen, since it’s the only wall space near our back door that leads to the garage.

I also added a storage bench with drawers under the wall-to-ceiling windows on the other wall. I’d have loved more room for our “mudroom,” but being creative has worked well too!

Time-Saving Tip
Don’t make the mistake of keeping shoes by the door but storing socks in the bedrooms. Keep a bin of socks near the door and you’ll save loads of time not running back and forth through the house when it’s time to leave.

Whether you have a large space or a small one, there are great ideas here to help you make the most of your home!
You can’t decorate a home well until it’s decluttered and organized, so I love sharing fresh, simple ideas for keeping the house tidy and running smoothly. Elements of a Mudroom
If you’d like to add a mudroom or turn an existing room into one, consider including some of these elements.
- Shoe Storage
- Cubbies or Cabinets
- Hooks
- Seating Area or Bench
- Pet Supplies or Storage
- Laundry Basket
- Rug or Floor Mat
- Table for Drop Zone
Obviously, not every space can fit all of these elements. A laundry basket may not suit the kitchen, but creativity can make almost anything possible.

Winning Mudroom Combinations
A mudroom can serve your home and family in so many ways. Here are some of the most popular mudroom combinations to think through.
Mudroom + Gardening Combo
A sink in the mudroom can do double duty for washing vegetables from the garden or watering plants.
A large sink and countertop are essential for these tasks. Add a pegboard with hooks or some kind of storage for gardening tools and potting supplies.
Pantry + Mudroom Combination
If your mudroom is off the kitchen, which it really should be, set aside a closet or shelves for extra pantry storage. Stock up when prices drop and you’ll save so much money!
Entryway Mudroom Ideas
The most common use of a mudroom is as an entrance to the home. In most cases a closed storage system works best, so you can hide the clutter from view. It will help keep the floors clean too!
And if the mudroom sits off the front door, don’t forget a hall tree, a drop zone and a quality rug for guests to use!
Work Station + Mudroom Space
In many new builds, the mudroom includes a desk for writing and paying bills. Add a computer for the kids’ homework and a spot for you to handle family business near the hub of the home.
Laundry + Mudroom Combination
Another popular pairing is a laundry room combined with a mudroom. It’s especially handy for families with athletes, since it makes it easy to drop muddy jerseys, dirty socks and wet clothes straight into the hamper.
Pet Zone + Mudroom
Last but not least, a pet zone is a fantastic addition to a mudroom. The floors are usually durable and easy to clean when Buddy tracks in muddy paw prints. If you’re building a new home, consider a built-in dog crate that looks like a piece of furniture. And don’t forget a large sink or dog shower for easy bath time!
I’ve included examples of all of these below, so keep reading!
