Bring new life to a worn, stained concrete porch by painting it yourself. This detailed tutorial walks you through cleaning the porch and then giving it a fabulous paint finish!
The covered back patio at our house has needed fresh paint since the day we moved in. But you know how projects drift to the bottom of the list, right?
We've pressure washed it almost every summer, but this year I finally said enough and headed to Lowe's for porch floor paint. I knew it would make the space look and feel a lot better.
Let's take a look at the before photos…

Update 2022: This is our former home, but this project is still a great idea if you have an aging concrete patio or porch!
Yikes, right?! It looked rough. My next purchase will be a new grill cover, too. LOL, it has definitely seen better days!
I found everything I needed at the local hardware store, including a special concrete floor primer. I'm confident this will look good for years to come.

Choosing a Porch Floor Paint Color
I was torn between navy and white stripes or a soft gray for the floor. I went with Revere Pewter (the gray in my living room) because I already loved it, but it looks much lighter outdoors in natural light than I expected. If I had to choose again, I'd pick a deeper gray.
The Valspar Porch, Floor and Patio Paint can also be tinted to almost any color, so choose whatever you love and have them color match it!
Supplies You'll Need to Paint Your Concrete Porch
- Valspar Concrete Binding Primer
- Valspar Porch, Floor and Patio Paint
- Painter's tape
- Roller tray (don't forget the liners. Cleanup is the quickest ever!)
- Paint roller (with an extension pole)
- 3/4 inch Nap Roller Covers
- Paint brush. These are my favorite brushes. They clean up beautifully and last for decades!

Steps to Paint a Concrete Porch
1. Pressure wash the porch & let it dry completely.
A small pressure washer did a fine job on our covered porch. Unfortunately, my husband broke it while hosing off the patio furniture, so we bought this one and love it!

2. Use painter's tape to mask anything you don't want painted.
I skip this step because I'm pretty steady with a freehand brush from my Purdy. But if you're not sure you can keep paint off the brick or other parts of your home, tape it off!
3. Apply one coat of Valspar Concrete Binding Primer.
Let it dry for 1 to 4 hours before applying paint. It went on like glue in a see-through white, then dried clear. It was dry to the touch after about 2 hours. Follow the directions on the can, which say to apply paint within 4 hours of the primer.

4. Apply 2 coats of Valspar Porch, Floor and Patio latex paint.
Decide whether you want two coats. Mine looked mostly fine after the first, but I like a second one for good measure. Let the first coat dry overnight before adding the second.

5. Wait 72 hours before moving your furniture back onto the porch.

That's it! Hooray!!!

It was such a simple process. I can't believe I waited so long to do it! If you're on the fence about updating your patio with a little paint… just go for it!
Shop the Patio Furniture I Use:
We bought this patio conversation set years ago, and it has held up beautifully!! The exact model is no longer sold, but I found some similar pieces from the same brand! As of 2024: I've since replaced it with this gorgeous wicker set with swivel glider chairs. I love them!
