My husband, Josh, bought this house eight years ago, before we met. He picked it because it was small (about 1,200 square feet), ideal for a roommate situation and close to downtown. Not exactly ideal for raising a family.

The location was great, though, no more than 15 minutes from anything in Huntsville. But it was definitely not kid friendly. We had two bedrooms, two baths and a tiny yard. And while I know our daughter is a few years away from starting school (she’s 1), we wanted to be in a better school district.
When I met Josh, the home was a complete bachelor pad. He had painted every room either builder’s beige or some bold, manly color. The floor was sagging in places and there was serious water damage at the back of the house. The carpet was gross and there were lots of pet stains … but guys don’t care about that sort of thing. I told him I wasn’t going to live there unless we made some changes: at the very least, fix the sagging floors, install some hardwood, and repair the water damage. So, two months before we got married in May of 2009, we started renovating. What began as a small project turned into a full gutting and demolition of the back of the house. Whew! Talk about a big project.
Here are some pictures from before and during the renovation:
