Have you ever felt like your home was bursting at the seams? You're not alone! Small house organization can be a real struggle, and so can an older home with no closet solutions. Clear your space and your mind with some of my tested ways to organize a small house that has no storage.

I get it: having too much stuff isn't always the problem. A thorough purge is necessary every now and then, but that alone doesn't solve things when you simply lack storage space. Organizing a house without built-in storage is a common challenge.
In our previous home I had to get really creative with storage solutions.
Even if your current storage situation isn't too bad, these small space organization tips will help you declutter better than ever. With a bit of creativity, every room can have the orderly sense of calm you'll love coming home to.

7 Great Solutions for Small Space Organization
I've gathered seven storage pieces and projects I've tackled in nearly every room of our home, from the living room and kitchen to the garage and my home office. Each example addresses the specific challenges of its room, but I think you'll see the approaches can work in your own home too, adapted to what you need.
1. Storage Ottomans and Tables

Clutter almost always shows up in the living room, since that's where we spend most of our time. In my home, I swapped our traditional coffee table for a stylish storage ottoman. It gives us a comfy footrest and also holds extra throw blankets, magazines and board games. These have been a lifesaver for moms of young kids who need easy toy storage, too.
A lift-top coffee table with hidden storage underneath is another space-saving option. They're usually not quite as big as ottomans, yet they still tuck away magazines, books and remotes nicely.
Choosing the right ottoman or coffee table can completely change your living room, not just the look but also how neat everything stays. When you shop, consider the size and style that suit your space, plus what you plan to store inside. You'll be amazed at how much more organized the room feels.
2. Built-in Bookshelves

Built-in bookshelves give you instant vertical storage while adding an architectural feature to your space. They're practical and attractive, which makes them ideal for small rooms. We were fortunate to have them flanking the fireplace when we moved into our current home, and now I can't imagine living anywhere without them.
Built-in bookcases work well in almost any room. In your home office, use them to display favorite books, bins of supplies and mail, and purely decorative accents. In kids' bedrooms, they're great for showing off treasured toys, framed photos and other keepsakes. In a dining room, they can hold favorite serving pieces, especially if you don't have room for a butler's pantry.
When you design your built-in bookshelves, think about the items you need to store, then create a mix of open and closed shelves to suit each need. Display decorative pieces while keeping clutter out of sight in cabinets or baskets. Combine vertical and horizontal spaces to make the most of the room and add visual interest.
3. Desk with Built-in Filing Cabinets

I gained so much handy storage in my office when I bought this desk with filing cabinets built into the base. Plenty of desks are more minimal, but this one balances clean, attractive lines with the hidden storage I need.
Using vertical storage like this keeps important documents, stationery and office supplies easy to reach yet out of sight. This sleek setup keeps my workspace clear and my mind focused. If you want an even more streamlined look, choose a desk with at least a few slim drawers under the top. Even a little extra organizing space makes a big difference.
4. Vertical Rack Systems, Clips and Hooks

When floor space is scarce, think vertically! Use wall-mounted rack systems with hooks and clips to make the most of your wall space. They let you hang things neatly so they're always within easy reach, instead of cluttering the corners. This works especially well for long, narrow items like cleaning tools, lawn and garden equipment, fishing gear and the like.
If a garage cleanup project is on your to-do list, these are a worthwhile investment that will make the job feel 100 times easier. To work out how many racks and hooks you need, list everything you want to store, then sketch quickly what will actually fit. Ceiling-mounted bike racks are another game changer for cluttered garages.
Vertical organizers help indoors, too. Even one small clip rack can instantly free up room in a tiny broom closet, for example. If you have a dedicated craft corner, a pegboard keeps supplies tidy and visible.
5. Dressers as Console Tables

This space isn't from my home, but the idea of turning a dresser into a console table is on my future DIY list. I love this example of custom shelving for board games, and I can see how a dresser-console would be another great solution for them. Needless to say, you can store many other things besides games and crafts in those drawers.
Repurposing furniture is a wonderful way to add character and function to your living space while cutting down on waste. Watch for unique pieces at thrift stores, antique shops or even in your own attic. There are plenty of how-tos on YouTube, Pinterest and DIY blogs for updating retro dressers with a new finish, paint and hardware to suit your decor.
6. Closet Shelving

This may seem obvious, but look at any closet space you don't need for hanging things and consider what it could hold if you simply built some shelves. In our last house we didn't have a pantry. What we did have was a narrow coat closet beside the kitchen that we didn't need for coats. I added some simple, easy-to-install shelves and instantly had room for our dry goods.
That made my grocery storage and meal prep so much easier. For your own project, start by assessing your needs and measuring the available space to pick the best shelf layout. Choose adjustable or removable shelves to fit items of different sizes, and leave room for future storage needs.
You could also add other storage features like door-mounted racks, hooks or baskets to squeeze out even more space. Label shelves and bins to keep things in order and make it easy for family members to find what they need.
7. Over-the-Door Storage

Make the most of your closet door with clever over-the-door organizers for crafts, gift wrap, shoes or accessories. This over-the-door system in our home keeps my gift supplies perfectly organized. In a bedroom, these can hold scarves, hats or even jewelry.
These organizers come in so many styles and sizes that they turn unused space into storage with very little effort. Consider one in the bathroom for toiletries, which keeps the linen closet and counters clear. In the pantry, use them for snacks, spices or cleaning supplies.
