Your home is far more than a place to live; it reflects your personality, creativity and taste. Naming it gives it a distinct identity, with charm and character that make it feel truly yours.
I know this will sound silly to many people, but here goes nothing...
"Do you name your home?"
You know, like "Lakeview Cottage" or "The Hydrangea Bungalow" or "Eastlake Manor"?
Naming a home is common with older, historic houses, but until recently I'd never considered naming ours. I was curious when I heard someone mention naming their new place. There's even an online house name generator that suggests great options. I filled out its short questionnaire while we were still in our old house, but I never settled on anything.
Whether you've just moved into a new space, are updating an older one, or simply feel inspired to name your home, this fun and thoughtful process lets you be creative and turn something as practical as an address into something magical.

So today I'm going to walk you through naming your home in a way that feels meaningful, memorable and uniquely yours. Stick around until the end of the post when I reveal the name I chose for mine!

Why Name Your Home?
Naming a home isn't only for grand estates or vacation rentals. Giving your house a name is fun, practical and surprisingly sentimental.
- A Personal Touch: A home name makes your space feel truly yours, just like picking paint colors or decorating the walls.
- Aesthetic Appeal: A name such as "The Rosewood Cottage" or "Birch Hill Lodge" adds a refined and welcoming touch. It looks lovely on custom signs, welcome mats and stationery!
- Conversation Starter: Your home's name can spark curiosity or stories when you host friends or have visitors.
And even if it's just for fun or a nod to your creative side, who says your home doesn't deserve a little extra personality?

Inspiration for Naming Your Home
Before you settle on a name, it helps to draw ideas from what surrounds you, including the house itself, your personal style and what matters to your family. Here are some ideas to get your creativity going.
Draw From Nature
Is your home surrounded by lush greenery, flowering gardens or a view of the lake? Let nature be your muse! Look for features that stand out around you, such as tree species, nearby water or local wildlife.
Example Ideas:
- Willow Creek Cottage
- Sunny Ridge Manor
- Bluebird Haven
- Pine Cone Hill
- Pebble Brook

Reflect the Architecture
What makes your home special architecturally? Whether it's a historic cottage, a modern loft or a rustic cabin, lean into its design style when choosing a name.
Example Ideas:
- The Gable House (perfect for a home with a gabled roof!)
- The Loft on Sixth
- Tudor's Nest
- The Cozy Cottage
- Fairfax Estate
Consider Sentimental References
If your home holds personal stories, favorite memories, or nods to your hobbies or favorite places, draw on those. Personal touches make a name even more special.
You could also take inspiration from a favorite spot inside the house. A cozy library, garden room or special reading nook might inspire a name that reflects how your family really uses the space.
Example Ideas:
- Granddad's Retreat
- Maple Grove (named after the tree your kids play under)
- The Vinyl Den (perfect for a music lover's abode!)
- Parisian Escape (for lovers of all things French)
- Liberty Heights (inspired by your favorite childhood novel)

Lean Into Humor or Quirkiness
A name doesn't have to be serious or sophisticated. If you like keeping things lighthearted, try something with personality or a bit of quirk!
Example Ideas:
- The Shire House (hello, Tolkien fans!)
- Area 52 (perfect for a space-loving enthusiast)
- Birdbrain Bungalow
- The Sandcastle (a playful nod to coastal living)
- The Waffle House (because breakfast IS the most important meal, right?)
Take Inspiration From History
If you have a historic home or live somewhere rich in cultural heritage, consider names that tell a story from the past. Even a brand-new house can carry a dignified name drawn from history or tradition.
Example Ideas:
- Franklin Manor
- The Lantern House
- Windsor Lodge
- Old Timber Inn
- Juniper Hall

6 Steps to Name Your Home
Now that you have some inspiration, it's time to start naming! Follow these six steps to give your home a name that feels personal and meaningful.
Step 1: Look to Your Surroundings
Take a walk outside and look over your property. Are there natural elements, landscapes or features that catch your eye? Perhaps there's a towering oak in the front yard or a babbling brook nearby. Use these distinctive details as inspiration.
Step 2: Think About Your Home's Personality
How does your home feel to you? Cozy? Modern? Grand? Pick a descriptive word or two that captures its core character. For example, a warm, rustic cabin might suggest "Timber Haven," while an elegant estate might inspire "Silverwood Manor."
If you're not sure how to describe your home yet, give it time. I strongly believe in slow decorating, letting a home's personality reveal itself as you live in it, decorate it and make memories there.

Think beyond how your home looks right now and consider how you want it to feel. Is it cozy and collected, traditional and elegant, casual and welcoming, or colorful and playful? If you're still defining your style, these simple ways to make your home feel more polished may help you spot which details matter most to you.
Step 3: Incorporate Personal Connections
What is meaningful to you and your family? It could be a place you've traveled, a special memory or a beloved relative. Personalize the name by weaving these elements into it.
Step 4: Play Around With Words
Combine details from your surroundings, family history or design to create the perfect name. Pair a descriptor with a location or feature to make it specific, such as "Sunny Birch Retreat" or "The Marigold Cottage." Brainstorm plenty of variations before you settle on a final choice.
Step 5: Check for Uniqueness
You'll want your home's name to stand out, especially if you're making signs or recording it officially (for example, if it's a rental). Search online to make sure it's one of a kind.

Step 6: Make It Official
Once you've chosen the name, start using it everywhere! Design a logo on Canva or with ChatGPT! Add a custom sign to your front porch, etch it on a welcome mat, or print it on your holiday cards. It's a lovely way to make it feel real.
Naming My Home
Recently, when I needed to change the name of our wifi network, I decided it was time to name my home.
After six years of living here and slowly making each room feel more like us, it seemed like the right moment to give our home an official name. You can see just how much it has changed in my six-year before-and-after home tour.
I was brainstorming a name when I remembered the little website for naming homes. I tried it, and I felt this house was the perfect one to bestow a name on.
After a few minutes I finally landed on one that seemed just right. Are you ready??
Drumroll, please...
Elmwood Manor
It took a little while for this to sink in as the name, but it's the one! It feels special because it nods to the elm tree planted just behind our driveway by her previous owner 17 years ago. I thought he might cry when he told us about his beloved elm at closing.
"Wood" because our home backs up to the woods. Easy enough!
And "manor" because "cottage" didn't seem to fit. LOL. Really, though, a cottage is a small, rural home, while a manor is grander and more stately. A manor's definition includes a grand home for a lord on a large estate. We don't have a big plot, but it has the feel of one because there's no marker behind the house where our property ends and someone else's begins.
I just thought that was a fun little tidbit to share. Studies suggest people think more highly of a home when it has a name, and I think that's probably true.

Create a Logo for Your New House Name
Use Canva, ChatGPT or another AI tool to design a logo with your new name! Then you can create items for your home that make it feel even more real. Use parts of the name, as I did. You might add your location or the year your home was built. The possibilities are endless!
I have Canva Pro, so I set about making a logo for my Elmwood Manor, and this is what I came up with!

You can also choose colors for your home as if it were a brand. We all know I love blue and green, so that felt right.
Next up, I want to make a sign with the name for somewhere in our home, like a front door knocker, tea towels or a nameplate for the front of the house. Any ideas on what I should make and where I should put it?
Final Thoughts: Make It Personal, Make It You
Naming your home should be a fun, personal process. Whether your style is classic and elegant or quirky and playful, your home's name is a chance to express yourself and make your space feel even more uniquely yours.
And remember, home is where the heart is, but a name? That's where the stories begin.
