Farmhouse sinks are a favorite in home design. Their charm and practicality make a lovely farmhouse kitchen or bathroom sink the perfect rustic accent.
I love a good farmhouse sink. It's timeless, simple and gorgeous. It's also bigger than a standard sink, which makes it easier to wash large pans, rinse produce, or stack dirty dishes when you're in a rush (come on, we've all done it).
The History of the Farmhouse Sink
You might be surprised to learn that farmhouse sinks (also called apron sinks) are having a moment, but they're not a new style at all. They originated in the 17th century in Great Britain and Ireland as a place to hold water hauled up from wells (I love a little history like that!).
Today, farmhouse kitchen sinks are prized for their rustic charm, and they're so popular in remodels that even new builds are starting to offer them as an option.
Psst – even if the farmhouse trend fades, apron front sinks work with almost any style and are here to stay!
If you're thinking about swapping out your kitchen sink, I'm sharing some farmhouse sink options I love. They show just how much variety and possibility the farmhouse style offers for your kitchen (or bathroom).

4 Reasons We Love Farmhouse Sinks
Not sure you want a farmhouse sink yet? Here are four reasons people love them.
Depth & Size
Standard sinks took over from farmhouse sinks because of their smaller size, but funnily enough, that same size is the reason apron sinks have become so popular.
They're huge, and that room lets you clean large items (think cookie sheets and roasting pots) that would be awkward to wash in a standard sink.
The depth also keeps water, germs and other splashes from flying around the kitchen, as this example from Joyfully Growing shows.

Extend Farther Than the Counter
Because farmhouse sinks sit flush with the cabinet front or slightly beyond it, water is less likely to drip down the cabinets and damage the wood.
Plus, that forward position brings you closer to the sink, which helps you avoid awkward posture and back strain while washing up.
Note: You can find sinks with flat, slanted or even curved fronts.
You can also add a drip edge detail, like this stunning example from Studio McGee, to keep water from damaging the floors or cabinets below.

A Wide Variety of Materials
In the early 20th century, farmhouse sinks in the United States were usually cast iron. Today they come in a range of materials, such as:
- Porcelain
- Copper
- Concrete
- Stone
- stainless steel
- Fireclay
- Cast Iron
- Composite
Each material lasts well and has its own look and feel, so you can find just the right one for your kitchen design!
For example, choosing stainless steel gives a more modern feel than a classic or rustic one, as this double basin sink shows below.

If your kitchen has stainless steel appliances, stainless might be the way to go.
Variety of Looks and Styles
Thanks to these newer materials, farmhouse sinks now come in many sizes, styles, colors and finishes.
Beyond size, color and finish, apron sinks also come with different front styles, including:
- Smooth fronts
- Square fronts
- Rounded fronts
- Rimed fronts
- Fluted fronts
- Embossed fronts
Style options aren't limited to the front. Apron sinks also come in several other configurations, including:
- Single basins
- Double basins
- Center drains
- Right drains
- Left drains
Take a look at this curved cement sink and see how it adds that final “pop” to a kitchen. The hard part might be choosing between the curved front and the flat one!
