I know I’m in the middle of refreshing our girls’ bathroom, but I get serious “squirrel” syndrome whenever it comes to decorating. Once I have the vision for one space, I’m ready to plan a new one before I’ve even started the makeover on the current space.
The kitchen is clearly the heart of most homes, and it’s where families gather more than anywhere else. Food is such a big part of a family’s story, and the kitchen is the hub of it.
The seating area, usually a bar-height or counter-height spot with chairs, holds a special place in the kitchen, since guests can enjoy a drink while the host cooks. Kids can eat breakfast at the bar or help stir something while mom makes dinner.

I can remember so many hours spent at my mom’s counter, sitting on the stools while she cooked and we chatted for ages, or helping her cook from the other side of the counter.
So one essential part of the kitchen experience is the bar stool. It’s more than just a chair. It’s a central part of the home and a big piece of family history, so it’s important to get it right. #nopressure #ha
I’m only half joking about getting it right, but it’s worth some thought before you invest in a set of bar stools.
Right now my kitchen bar has four mismatched stools. I painted some hand-me-down stools in Chateau Gray Annie Sloan Chalk Paint several years ago, and I picked up these metal stools years back to go with them. I’ve always wanted a matching set of four, though.
Then again, since my girls use them as TV trays while they watch from the kitchen, maybe I should wait to replace them until they’re a little older.
While I’ve been daydreaming about my next home projects, I thought I’d share some of my favorites. My assistant is about to finish building her house and has been shopping for bar stools, so she chimed in with her picks too!
What to Consider Before Buying Bar Stools
1. Getting the Right Height.
Make sure the stools suit the height of your counter. There are three sizes of bar stools: counter height, bar height or extra tall.

Choose the one that best fits your counter height.
2. Getting the Right Width.
You don’t want to squeeze bar stools in so tightly that people are sitting on top of each other or can’t get in and out. Stools with smaller seats let you fit more into the space, but larger seats with armrests mean you’ll have fewer seats. Obviously, right?
A good rule of thumb is to choose stools between 17″ and 21″ wide and allow 6″ between each one.
3. Choosing the Right Type.
Now for the fun part! You’ll choose between backless or with a back, with arms or without, padded fabric, metal or wood. The options are endless. I prefer metal or wood right now because I have small kids and they’re easier to keep clean. Once my kids are grown, I think I’ll splurge on some fabric ones, because I love how they look!
If you have a larger space, chairs with arms are fun and seem more comfortable to me. In a small space, it’s probably best to stick with armless chairs. The same logic applies to choosing chairs with or without backs.
If you have a small space, like mine with a tight walkway behind the bar stools, I think backless is the way to go. But if you have plenty of room, I love a pretty back on a bar stool.
And then there’s the question of swivel or not swivel, and lift or not lift?
