Why I Finally Hired a House Cleaner and What Changed

The kitchen sink was embarrassingly filthy—so coated in grime you could practically write your name in it, like the classic “wash me” scrawl on a dusty car. As a mom of two young kids and a momtrepreneur juggling work and family, deep cleaning the house sat at the bottom of an endless to-do list. I kept things tidy enough for day-to-day life, but a thorough cleaning kept getting postponed, and that dirty sink was a constant source of low-level stress.

I’ve always been a DIY type and hated paying someone for work I could do. I even cleaned homes for extra cash in high school. But over time it became clear that capability doesn’t equal capacity—just because I could clean didn’t mean I should, given everything else on my plate. There weren’t enough hours in the day, and the mounting chores made me more irritable than I wanted to be.

Why I Hired a House Cleaner and why you might need one, too!

Clutter was another factor. I felt the house had too much stuff to be worth hiring a cleaner, and so I started decluttering on my own. That process inspired my 30 Days to Less of a Hot Mess series, which came out of the small, consistent steps I used to pare down our belongings and make the space more manageable.

Side note: My home is now less cluttered than it’s ever been. A few stacks remain, but it’s a dramatic improvement—and that progress is part of why bringing in a cleaner has worked so well.

Why am I Telling you About my House Cleaner?

I’m not sharing this to brag. My goal is to show how delegating household tasks when it makes sense can improve your life. Hiring help isn’t about laziness or indulgence—it’s a practical decision to reclaim time and energy for the responsibilities only you can handle. Just as I’ve hired part-time assistants for business tasks, hiring a house cleaner allowed me to focus on family, work, and other priorities without sacrificing my sanity.

Reading stories from other busy moms who hired cleaning help made it easier to decide. If you’re a working parent, a caregiver, or someone stretched thin by obligations, hiring a cleaner is worth considering. Even if you enjoy cleaning, sometimes delegating is the most effective way to manage your time and reduce stress.

Pros to Having a House Cleaner

Bringing a house cleaner into my routine has done more than restore cleanliness—it’s delivered unexpected benefits that improved daily life. If you’re unsure about hiring one, these advantages may help you decide.

  • A consistently clean home every two weeks. I schedule get-togethers and visitors around cleaning days because everything—from bathrooms to floors to surfaces—looks and feels refreshed after a visit.
  • Gradual deep cleaning of problem areas. Over months, the cleaner has tackled spots I consistently ignored. For example, one day I found the baby’s high chair emptied and upside down in the utility sink—she’d deep cleaned it thoroughly. Little wins like that add up.
  • Regular decluttering is enforced. Knowing a cleaner comes every two weeks motivates me to pick up and sort through items regularly. That habit keeps clutter from piling back up and helps me identify what still needs attention.
  • More quality time with family. With cleaning off my immediate list, I’m less frazzled and more present. Fewer frustration-driven outbursts and more relaxed moments make family time better for everyone.
  • Improved focus and efficiency. Physical clutter drains mental energy. With less visual chaos, I have clearer thinking and more productive work sessions, so I can concentrate on parenting and running my businesses.

The One Thing that Could be a Problem

My main concern is making sure my kids still learn to clean up after themselves. I’m intentional about assigning age-appropriate chores—especially to my 6-year-old—so they don’t grow up expecting someone else to do everything. As they get older, I may reduce professional cleanings to give them more responsibility and opportunities to learn how to maintain a home.

It has been Totally Worth It

Hiring a cleaner a few times a month has been a blessing. Giving up the pride of “I can do it all” returned a measure of calm I desperately needed. The cleaner’s visits keep clutter in check, force me to address trouble spots, and create a more peaceful environment for our family.

If you’re undecided, try it for a short period and see how it impacts your life. Look for a reputable cleaning company in your area that’s bonded and insured, and ask trusted friends or family for recommendations—word-of-mouth referrals are often the best way to find reliable help.

Have you hired cleaning help before? Or are you considering delegating household cleaning? I’d love to hear your experience or thoughts.
