It’s that time of year—at least here in the South—when the air still feels like summer but the calendar says back-to-school and football season has begun. That in-between stretch calls for transitional pieces in our closets: dresses that read like fall with their colors and prints but remain breathable and lightweight enough for warm afternoons.
SHOP THE LOOK

I recently ordered several transitional fall dresses from Walmart Fashion and have been impressed with the range: easy, wearable silhouettes, seasonal shades and prints, and fabrics that still feel cool on warmer days. These pieces are ideal for building a fall wardrobe when the thermometer hasn’t quite caught up to the season. They work for everyday errands, casual brunches, tailgate-style family events, and more polished daytime gatherings like showers or meetings.
When shopping for fall-to-summer transitional dresses, I look for a few key things: muted autumnal colors or darker florals, lightweight woven fabrics (rayon, cotton blends, and breathable knits), adjustable sleeve options, and silhouettes that layer well under jackets or over thin sweaters. Dresses with small design details—button-fronts, tabs to secure rolled sleeves, tiers, and subtle ruffles—feel seasonal without being heavy.
One of my favorites from the order is a long-sleeve button-down dress available in several patterns. I picked the blue-and-white version because it mixes classic crispness with a soft fall palette. The button-tab sleeves are especially practical: you can roll them up and secure them, which keeps you comfortable during warmer parts of the day and lets you button them down when the breeze picks up. For fit, I sized up one from my usual size to give a little extra room across the shoulders, and the fit was ideal for me. I wore it to my daughter’s Junior Cotillions parents’ meeting and received several compliments—it’s polished enough to feel put-together but relaxed enough to be comfortable for hours.

Another standout is a tiered dress with ruffled sleeves, which comes in multiple colors and prints. Its airy tiers add movement, while the ruffled sleeves give a feminine, season-appropriate detail. It’s exactly the kind of dress that looks great with a denim jacket or a long cardigan when the evenings cool down. For game days or outdoor events where you want to look put-together but still stay comfortable, this dress is a perfect option. I wore my usual size in this one and found the fit flattering and breezy.
Styling tips for transitional dresses:
- Layer smart: A lightweight jean jacket, cropped sweater, or longline cardigan instantly transforms a warm-weather dress into a fall-ready outfit.
- Shoes matter: Pair dresses with ankle boots, slip-on sneakers, or loafers depending on the look—boots for a more seasonal feel, sneakers for casual days, and sandals while it’s still warm.
- Accessorize: Add a lightweight scarf, a wide belt to define the waist, or simple jewelry to elevate the outfit without adding bulk.
- Fit and fabric: If you’re broader through the shoulders, consider sizing up for comfort; breathable fabrics like rayon or cotton blends keep you cool while looking polished.
- Care: Check care labels; many of these dresses wash easily on gentle cycles and require minimal ironing.
One of the best things about these dresses is the price point—you can try a few styles without stretching your budget, which makes it easy to experiment with prints and cuts you might not normally choose. If you love variety, this season is a chance to stock up on a few transitional dresses that you can layer into full fall as the temperatures drop.
If you’re refreshing your wardrobe for the season, look for muted fall tones, darker florals, tiered silhouettes, and sleeve details that allow you to adapt as the day warms or cools. These simple choices make it easy to feel ready for fall while staying comfortable in late-summer weather.
I hope you find one (or two—or three) dresses you love this season. Happy fall and happy shopping!
