Open-ended questions are a wonderful way to spark deep conversation with family and friends! Rather than simply asking "How was your day?", try these conversation starters! Enjoy your dinner!

This is such an easy addition to your Thanksgiving dinner, yet I think it could become one of the most meaningful parts.
This year I'll be using these conversation starters with my family for the very first time! I hope they get some great conversations flowing. Maybe we'll even make it a new tradition!
I typed up 8 fairly light questions or prompts to inspire meaningful talk about this season of gratitude. I also slipped in a "What do you want for Christmas?" question. That's just to help anyone who secretly needs gift ideas for their family. You're welcome.

My husband added "What's your most embarrassing holiday moment?" I almost left it out because I couldn't think of a single embarrassing moment of my own. Evidently, though, he had more than one to share. Let's just say he admits he sometimes suffers from foot-in-mouth syndrome.
I love the simple leaf outline and thought it looked lovely with a sprig of boxwood. But it looks great on its own, too, if you'd rather not put greenery on your plate right before dinner.
You could wrap them around a cloth dinner napkin or set them beside the plates. Or simply place them all in a bowl in the middle of the table and let everyone draw a question.

Recently I heard a well-known speaker describe having just one conversation at a large dinner party. It was a special event with hosts seated at each table. The hostess explained there was only one rule that night: only one conversation could happen at the table at a time. No little side chats allowed.
At first, I might have thought someone was being rude by telling me who I could or couldn't talk to! But his explanation made sense. One conversation pushed everyone to get to know one another, and it required people to really listen. He said it was one of the best dinners he'd ever attended, and now he and his wife follow the same rule at home.

I'm not going to introduce any new dinnertime rules at my house. Well, maybe just that you have to sit up in your seat and finish your dinner. #lifewithkids
But I think it's a superb idea for a large gathering like Thanksgiving. At least my family's Thanksgiving is big, with 24 people counting my parents, siblings, their spouses and my nieces and nephews.

And these conversation starters will keep everyone connected.
In my mind, there are two ways to use them. One person can read a question, answer it, then move on to the next. Or you can read a question and let everyone share their answer. It probably depends on how many people you have and how long you want to stay.

I hope you enjoy this free printable! I printed mine on kraft paper and cut them out by hand.
