I’ll be honest: this summer has felt less like lazy downtime and more like a beautiful, busy blur. Between Vacation Bible School, lake trips, pool days, play dates, and the bittersweet moments of saying goodbye to my grandmother, my calendar has been full and my energy often low. I imagined that with my husband around during the summer I’d tackle a long list of home projects, but that didn’t quite happen. Instead, we chose time together over ticking off tasks, and that felt right.
Because the season has been so full, my decorating approach this year was intentionally simple—what I like to call “lazy summer decor.” Rather than reinventing every space, I kept the spring mantel I loved and added a few coastal touches to give it a summertime vibe. A couple of starfish here, a bit of sea glass there, and the whole look felt fresh without requiring a full overhaul. Keeping a base look and layering seasonal accents is a great trick for anyone who wants quick, attractive summer decor with minimal effort.

One of my favorite small updates was styling my Board and Batten shelf. It’s a spot I love to decorate because a little vignette gives so much character to the room. For summer, I mixed in light, airy pieces and textures that suggest the beach—driftwood tones, soft blues, and a few natural elements. These subtle changes make the room feel seasonal without creating clutter or requiring a big time investment.

My proudest DIY to date—a set of weathered wooden beach buoys—found a new place on a side table beneath the gallery wall. They add color and texture and reinforce the casual, coastal vibe I wanted. Weathered finishes and simple shapes are practical choices for summer decor because they feel relaxed and lived-in, which suits the season perfectly.

I’ll admit I cropped some photos because summer living tends to come with a bit of disorder—bags by the door, wet towels, and the memories of a late-night return from the lake. Real life shows up, and I’m embracing that. A lived-in home tells the story of family time and adventures, and a few scattered items are proof of good days.

To add a bit of sparkle, I tucked some sea glass into a favorite small vase from Target. The sea glass I found (on sale, happily) adds translucent color that catches the light and reinforces the beachy theme. Little details like this are an easy, budget-friendly way to refresh a room for summer.

Another corner of the living room features a large globe that has special meaning for our family. It originally belonged to my husband’s dad, and it had been in storage for several years while I searched for the right spot. Placing it on the hearth felt like giving it a proper place in our daily life. It’s both decorative and sentimental, and Miss A loves to spin it whenever she’s nearby. I’m thinking of giving the brass accents a light Rub ’n Buff treatment someday, but for now it’s perfect as-is.

If you’re looking for ways to update your home for summer without a lot of effort, here are a few easy ideas that worked for me: keep a favorite base display and add one or two seasonal accents; use natural textures like wood, rope, or sea glass; place meaningful, personal items where they can be seen and enjoyed; and accept a little summer mess as part of the season’s charm. These simple strategies make seasonal decor manageable and more enjoyable.
Thanks for taking this lazy summer tour with me. I’d love to hear how you decorated for summer this year—did you go all out, or keep things casual and easy like I did? Either way, I hope your season has been full of good moments and time spent with the people you love.
I’m heading out now to a design conference, and I’m excited to share a recap when I’m back and recharged. Have a wonderful day!
