Quick Storage Closet Makeover: Small Closet Organization Tips

Using my 5-step decluttering method, I cleared out my decor closet and turned it into a functional, efficient—and even beautiful—storage space.

With several home projects temporarily on hold—painting, new sod, a garage overhaul and a finished kitchen—I decided to tackle a behind-the-scenes space that had been neglected since we moved in a year and a half ago: our decor closet.

One of the things that drew us to this house was the generous storage. After living in a home with very little storage, I was thrilled to finally have closets where I could stash extras and close the door. So when I discovered a storage closet off the loft upstairs, I knew it would make the perfect decor closet. I rotate a fair amount of decorative items seasonally, and I needed a proper place to store and access them.

Before Storage Closet Organization

When we moved, several boxes were labeled simply “decor closet” and were hurriedly stashed in there. I could reach a few items, but the space quickly became a messy, nearly unusable pile—I could barely walk inside.

I decided it was time to declutter and reorganize the closet properly. If you want to follow my process step-by-step, see my post: How to Declutter a Room in 5 Simple Steps.

The closet is roughly 10′ x 4′, and the existing wire shelving and long hanging rack simply didn’t suit our needs. I needed accessible shelving and clear sightlines so I could actually find items when I needed them.

Old Wire Closet System

I measured the space and found inexpensive bookshelves that would fit. I was able to arrange five units: four along the left wall and one on the back wall. Two of the shelving units meet in the corner, creating a small inaccessible gap. To prevent items from falling into that corner void, I attached a thin piece of plywood across the top of the gap.

While the closet was emptied, I sorted through every piece of decor and removed items I no longer wanted or used. Decluttering made the next steps much easier—less to store, more intentional placement of what I kept. It was a great time to set aside items for a neighborhood yard sale and to pare down excess.

And here’s the result—Tada!

Organized Storage Closet

I can now walk into the closet and see everything at a glance. No more tripping over boxes on the floor or hunting for a single frame. The space is organized, easy to use, and practical.

Hanging Frames in Decor Closet

To maximize the room, I hung larger framed decor on the wall opposite the shelves and used narrow spaces—such as the gap between a shelf and the door—to store faux stems and other long items upright. The shelving still has room, so I plan to pull seasonal decor from the attic and designate this closet as the single, visible home for spring, summer and fall items. Having seasonal decor in one accessible spot will help me keep only what I use and quickly spot anything that can be discarded.

My goal was simple: create a space that hides extras but stays organized, efficient, and easy to access. Organization saves time and money—it prevents unnecessary repurchasing and stops you from wasting time hunting for things. A designated place for everything is a small habit that has a big payoff.
