Last year I made a small burlap wreath for Christmas and loved how versatile it was. I went back to Hobby Lobby and picked up a larger wire frame planning to make a bigger version, but life got busy and it took nearly a year before I actually finished it for Miss A’s birthday party. Procrastination aside, I’m so glad I finally completed it—this wreath is very forgiving and comes together quickly.

Burlap wreaths are everywhere these days, and I was especially inspired by my sister-in-law’s version. She swaps out wooden letters and seasonal accents so the wreath always feels fresh. I loved how it looked for football season and later saw it dressed up with “ONE” letters for her son’s birthday, which I copied for Miss A’s celebration.

After the birthday, I switched the wreath into a winter/anytime version. I’ve often wondered what to display between Christmas and spring, and this burlap wreath fills that gap perfectly. I left the pink polka-dot ribbon for Valentine’s Day and may change the top bow afterward to suit the season.

The result is a simple, charming wreath that’s easy to customize. Change letters, bows, or small ornaments to match holidays, birthdays, or seasonal decor. It’s a great year-round wreath solution for porches and interior doors.

The Details…

To make this wreath we followed a simple tutorial called “Easiest Burlap Wreath You Will Ever Make.” The basic technique is straightforward: weave the burlap ribbon in and out of the wire wreath frame, forming puffs as you go until the frame is full. It’s a perfect nap-time craft—quick, repetitive, and satisfying.

Note: I used a lot more burlap than the tutorial suggested. The tutorial estimated 12–15 yards, but for an 18-inch wreath frame I used roughly 30–40 yards. I originally purchased 20 yards of non-wired burlap ribbon (the type you want for this technique) and supplemented with about 10+ yards of wired burlap I already had. If you shop in-store, wait for a 50% off sale or use coupons to save on ribbon.

For lettering and accents I found larger wooden letters at Hobby Lobby and a set of “welcome” letters at Michaels. The polka-dotted burlap ribbon is one of my favorite patterned ribbons; it came from Hobby Lobby as well. To create the bow I used a tutorial from Thistlewood Farm, which gives clear, easy instructions for a full, attractive burlap bow.

One clever trick I borrowed from my sister-in-law is the attachment method for the letters. Instead of hot-gluing letters directly to the wreath (which would make them hard to remove), she stapled a short piece of floral wire to the backs of the letters and then tied them to the wreath form. I also secured the bow to the top of the wreath with floral wire. This keeps elements removable and reusable for different seasons.

The wire-and-staple method works especially well with larger letters. Smaller letters sometimes need a bit of hot glue to secure them before wiring, but be gentle when tying so the glue doesn’t pull away. If the hot-glued piece holds while you attach the wire, the letters will stay put and are still removable when you want to change the display.

This DIY burlap wreath quickly became one of my favorite projects. It’s affordable, forgiving, and endlessly customizable. My only regret is waiting so long to make it—once you try this method, you’ll understand why it’s so addictive.
