How to Prepare Your Home for Summer: Checklist

Cold weather takes a toll on a home—get your house ready for warmer weather with these practical tips and suggestions.

If you live in a warm climate or are transitioning from a cool spring into summer, now is the ideal time to prepare your home. Tackling a few maintenance tasks before the heat settles in will keep your family comfortable, reduce energy costs, and help prevent last-minute repairs on the hottest days.

10 Ways to Get Your Home Ready for Summer

Summer Home Maintenance Ideas

A little seasonal preparation goes a long way. Over the years I’ve learned that a short list of targeted tasks lowers energy bills and keeps our home comfortable all summer long. Use this checklist as a starting point for getting your home ready for the season.

1. Change the ceiling fan direction

Ceiling fans should rotate counterclockwise in summer to create a cooling breeze. Stand under the fan, turn it on at low speed, and check the blade rotation and airflow. If it’s turning clockwise, flip the direction switch on the motor housing. The right direction improves comfort and allows you to raise the thermostat a degree or two without losing comfort.

2. Dust the ceiling fan blades

While you’re at the fan, clean the blades. A simple trick is to pull a pillowcase over each blade and slide it off to capture dust without scattering it. Clean blades move through air more efficiently and help keep the room feeling fresher.

3. Get an air conditioner tune-up

An annual AC service prevents failures during peak heat. A technician can check refrigerant levels, clean coils, inspect filters and electrical components, and verify proper airflow. Regular maintenance improves efficiency and extends equipment life, reducing the chance of a breakdown on the hottest day.

4. Switch out curtains

Curtains are both decorative and functional. In summer, consider blackout or lined curtains and shades to block direct sunlight and reduce heat gain. Bamboo or woven shades with liners look natural and can make a big difference in rooms that face the sun. The right window coverings reduce cooling load and protect furniture from sun damage.

5. Switch out linens

Swap heavy quilts and flannel sheets for breathable cotton, linen, or lightweight blankets and sheets. Natural fibers wick moisture and feel cooler against the skin, improving sleep and comfort without adjusting the thermostat as low.

6. Clean out dryer vents

Lint buildup in dryer vents is a major fire hazard and reduces dryer efficiency. Clean the vent at least once a year, more often if you do frequent loads. Disconnect the dryer and vacuum or brush the lint from both the lint trap housing and the exterior vent. If you’re unsure, consider a professional vent cleaning to ensure proper clearance and airflow.

7. Check your exterior for holes and gaps

Inspect the exterior of your home for gaps in siding, damaged screens, loose weatherstripping, or holes around vents and pipes. Sealing those openings keeps cooled air inside, lowers energy bills, and prevents pests from entering. Check door sweeps, window seals, and attic vents—addressing small gaps now avoids bigger problems later.

8. Clean your patio furniture

Get outdoor furniture ready for use by removing pollen, dirt, and mildew. Wicker, metal, and plastic furniture can usually be cleaned with mild soap and water; outdoor fabrics often benefit from a gentle wash and thorough drying. If you have a pressure washer, use it carefully on concrete, decking, and durable surfaces to restore a fresh outdoor space.

9. Add some summer decor

Once maintenance is done, refresh your decor with summer accents—light throw pillows, bright artwork, woven textures, and seasonal greenery. Small changes like swapping a throw or adding a vase of fresh lemons can make rooms feel lighter and more inviting for the season.

10. Have some summer fun

Summer is also a season for experiences. Plan outdoor activities, make a family bucket list, and set aside time to relax in the spaces you’ve prepared. Creating memories and enjoying your refreshed home is the best part of seasonal upkeep.

These ten steps provide a balanced mix of maintenance and refresh tasks that make your home more comfortable, more efficient, and ready for summer living. Do you have other seasonal tasks you swear by? Add them to your checklist to keep your home in top shape year after year.
