The holidays are coming up fast and furious. That’s why we need to talk about decluttering and organizing the playroom before the holidays hit. Trust me, you’ll want to get organized ahead of time to save your sanity later.

How to Organize the Playroom before the Holidays!

I set aside time every October or November for a major declutter, because the influx of stuff at Christmas can be stressful and overwhelming if you’re not prepared. I also love donating their old, unused toys so other kids can get a Christmas gift they’ll love!

Watching your kids frantically tear into their gifts is fun for everyone. However, when you look around the room on Christmas morning and see it buried in paper, packages and tons of TOYS, you may be wondering what on earth to do with it all.

Well, I have some easy ideas and storage solutions that will get your toy room in top shape before the holidays hit. Then you can add all the new stuff without losing your mind!

Playroom Organizing Ideas

Let’s face it. When your home is cluttered and disorganized, it can cause unnecessary stress. It’s better to nip it in the bud before it becomes a problem.

Isn’t it crazy how many toys kids end up with? It’s hard to let them go, because we all worry the kids might want to play with them again.

Quick tip: Sometimes I put toys the kids no longer play with into a large bin in a closet. If they don’t ask for them within 6 months, I go ahead and donate them.

If you don’t want to part with anything just yet, that’s okay! Let’s get it organized with these inspiring ideas. You may be inspired enough to start boxing up older toys.

Organize for a Look You’ll Love

Elsie at A Beautiful Mess thought of everything when decorating and organizing the playroom. Shelving is a perfect way to display all sorts of toys while keeping them tidy. Baskets are a pretty way to store items you don’t want on view all the time.

This toy room has everything you could need to get your space in order. There’s a comfy couch, an art table, and art supplies that look beautifully organized on display.

Using plastic jars with lids and arranging everything by color is visually appealing. Plus, it helps your little one know and understand where everything belongs.

The only problem I see with this playroom is that your kids may want to be in there all the time instead of hanging out with you! Just kidding, but they’ll love it without a doubt. I kind of wish I had a room like this for myself!

Make Use of Closet Space

If you don’t have a ton of space, or if the playroom doubles as a family room, you have to use every inch. To keep it organized, it helps to have a system in place that makes it easy.

I love what Erin at Sunny Side Up did with her playroom. She made the most of the large closet and used the shelving perfectly. Labeling plastic totes and baskets makes it simple for the kids to put everything back when they’re finished.

This room also has a chic play tent that doubles as a home for stuffed animals. The coffee table is a great spot for playing with cars, and extra toys can be tucked into baskets underneath. She made sure to use every bit of space she had.

Simple but Organized

Alicia from Thrifty & Chic didn’t have a room that could serve as a toy room on its own. So she made the best of it and added shelving right in her living room to create a mini playroom.

If you didn’t know it was there, you’d have no idea this is also the kids’ play area. Decluttering made a big difference in the space, too.

Using shelving that doubles as seating is a fabulous idea! The subtle, neutral fabric bins are a pleasant touch that still catches the eye.

So don’t worry if you don’t have an actual playroom. This is a wonderful alternative that will keep everyone happy, and you’ll have much less stress.

Bring Farmhouse Style Into Your Organized Playroom

Decluttering the playroom is also a great time to add some farmhouse decor! You can make it a space everyone in the family wants to hang out in, even if they don’t play with toys. This room is so inviting and full of charm.

The wooden crates under the television are each numbered, which keeps things easy to organize. Lauren at Bless’er House added glass jars to the shelving to organize and declutter.

There’s a station for art projects, and she even framed some of the artwork as decorations for the room. It turned out lovely!

Use Shelving for Large, Bulky Toys

Abby Lawson knew she had a lot of large, awkward toys to organize. Open shelving was the perfect touch for the playroom. She decluttered by adding a large shelving unit with lots of baskets for organization. She even thought to hang artwork on the wall.

The result? A beautiful, organized playroom. The room is large enough to leave plenty of floor space for play. With everything in its place, it’s easy to stay clutter-free and ready for all those new Christmas gifts.

Organize Books in the Playroom with a Reading Nook

Books can take over any toy room or playroom, especially if you have a little bookworm on your hands. You can find inexpensive wooden crates and use them to keep books neatly organized. Adding some large, comfy pillows makes the space inviting and encourages your kiddos to grab a book and enjoy a story or two.

Rachel at Maison de Pax thought of everything for this space. There’s still room for the extra books and toys you’ll receive for Christmas. Simple touches, like a map on the wall or some chalkboard circles, go a long way toward staying organized, too.

Step-by-Step: How to Declutter a Playroom

If you haven’t sorted through toys yet, the images above may seem impossible to achieve. However, with a little prep work, you can have the organized, decluttered play space of your dreams. Here’s how to tackle it.

  1. Gather all the toys your kids own and pile them into one space. It will probably look pretty scary, but this is a crucial first step.
  2. Grab a couple of boxes and label them: one for donations and one for storage. Also keep a trash bag on hand for broken or damaged toys.
  3. Start sorting through the toys. Look at the pile and see what you can trash or donate right away, then get rid of them accordingly.
  4. If you have toys that are sentimental or that you want to save for a future child or cousin, put them in the storage box.
  5. Once you’re left with toys you want to keep, split the pile in two. Store half in a hall closet or somewhere accessible but out of sight. The other half can go back into your play space.
  6. Every three months, swap the toys. Put the ones that have been out into the closet, and bring out the ones that were stored. This keeps your playroom decluttered and your kids interested.

See, that wasn’t so bad! Decluttering doesn’t have to cost a fortune. It just takes a little inspiration and time. I hope you feel confident about decluttering the playroom before the holidays. You’ve got this, mama!
