Enjoy a relaxing soak with these easy DIY bath bombs—perfect for pampering yourself or giving as thoughtful gifts. They’re simple to make, far less expensive than store-bought versions, and you can choose your favorite scent.

The BEST DIY Bath Bombs

I love making bath bombs at home. My girls adore baths and would happily use one every time—plus the coconut oil in these helps keep skin from drying out during the colder months. Having a jar of homemade bath bombs in the bathroom is a great reminder to slow down and enjoy a few minutes of self-care.

Below I share the recipe first, followed by gift ideas and creative packaging tips to turn these into beautiful presents.

My interest in bath and body recipes began a few years ago when I taught others how to use essential oils in homemade products. I still use essential oils daily and recommend choosing high-quality oils when possible. If you use citrus oils, take care: they can cause photosensitivity—avoid sun exposure for 24 hours after using citrus-scented bath bombs.

How to Make the Best Bath Bombs

The following step-by-step process produces fizzy, fragrant bath bombs that hold together and look beautiful. Work steadily and avoid adding too much liquid at once—too much moisture will activate the citric acid prematurely and cause fizzing before the bombs are molded.

Step 1: Mix dry ingredients. In a large bowl, whisk together 1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup citric acid, and 1/4 cup Epsom salt until evenly combined.

Step 2: Add color. Sprinkle mica powder into the dry mix and whisk to distribute evenly. Mica pigments give vibrant, long-lasting color and are preferable to liquid food coloring, which can add unwanted moisture.

Step 3: Combine oils. In a small container, mix 2 teaspoons fractionated coconut oil with about 20 drops of your chosen essential oils until blended.

Step 4: Add liquid to the dry mix slowly. While continuously stirring the dry ingredients, add the oil mixture a little at a time. Stir well after each addition to prevent the citric acid from reacting unevenly. The goal is an even, slightly damp mixture that can be packed without crumbling.

Step 5: Mist with witch hazel. Using a spray bottle, mist the mixture lightly until it clumps like wet snow and can be packed in your hand. Take care not to over-saturate—if the mixture becomes too wet it will fizz inside the mold or expand and crack. If it does get too wet, press it into muffin tins or open molds to allow extra room for expansion.

Step 6: Pack the mold. Fill one half of a 60 mm mold with mixture, pressing firmly. Repeat with the other half.

Step 7: Press and set. Press the two halves together until the bomb is compact and round. Keep the mold closed for about 30 minutes, then carefully remove one half and leave the half-exposed bomb to dry further.

Step 8: Fully dry before use. Allow bath bombs to dry at least 24 hours before removing the mold and storing. Store finished bath bombs in an airtight container away from humidity.

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup Epsom salt
  • 20 drops essential oils (adjust to preference)
  • 2 tsp fractionated coconut oil

  • 60 mm bath bomb molds (4)
  • Mica colorant, as desired

Instructions

  1. Combine baking soda, citric acid, and Epsom salt in a large bowl and whisk thoroughly.

  5. Fill both halves of the mold and press them together firmly.
  6. Keep the mold closed for 30 minutes, then remove one side and allow bombs to dry for at least 24 hours.
