How to Install Curtain Trim Tape for a Custom Finish

Adding curtain trim tape gives a custom, polished look that makes your home feel uniquely yours. Learn how to apply trim tape to curtains in six simple, no-sew steps.

I believe a room isn’t finished until it has thoughtfully chosen window treatments. Curtains are often the quickest way to add texture, color, and personality to a space. But you don’t have to settle for the basic panels you find on the rack — adding decorative trim tape instantly upgrades plain or store-bought curtains, and you can do it with no sewing required.

Trim tape works beautifully on drapery panels, roman shades, and almost any fabric window treatment. You can mix and match trims and fabrics to create countless looks — from subtle and traditional to bold and modern.

For my dining room makeover, I wanted to introduce more blue into the palette. Adding a narrow blue trim that coordinates with the chair fabric and nearby cabinetry was the perfect, low-effort solution to tie the room together.

Below are the curtains straight out of the package — simple beige gingham panels. They looked great as-is, but the trim gives them a custom, tailored feel that complements the rest of the room.

Supplies You Need for Adding Curtain Trim

  1. Curtains — hang them as high as possible for the best visual impact (ceiling or just above the window).
  2. 6–8 yards of trim tape, depending on curtain length and number of panels (trim suppliers are listed below).
  3. Stitch Witchery or other fusible web (choose a heavy-duty version for thicker trim).
  4. An iron with steam.

How to Add Curtain Trim Tape

1. Iron the Curtains

Start with wrinkle-free fabric. Applying trim to a smooth surface ensures it adheres evenly and looks professional.

2. Measure 1–2 inches from the Edge

Decide how far the trim should sit from the edge of the panel — 1 to 2 inches works well for most trims. If your curtain pattern lines up (like a buffalo check), use it as a guide. Otherwise, mark a light line or use a straight edge as you work to keep the trim perfectly straight.

3. Fold 2–3 inches of Trim Tape over the Top Edge

Fold the top end of the trim tape over the curtain header by about 2–3 inches to create a finished edge. Slip a few pieces of fusible web between the trim and the fabric, then press with a steam iron for 10–15 seconds following the fusible web manufacturer’s directions. Allow the area to cool and check that the fold is secure; if needed, press again briefly.

4. Place 1–2 Rows of Fusible Web Where the Trim Will Go

Lay 1–2 strips of fusible web along the planned path of the trim. The number of rows depends on the trim width and weight: heavier trim benefits from extra adhesive. Set the trim in place on top of the fusible web so it aligns with your guide line.

5. Iron the Trim Tape Down

Work in sections: press one iron-length of trim at a time, holding the iron still for 10–12 seconds per section (or as directed by the fusible web instructions). Continue down the panel until the trim is fully adhered. For thick trims, press from the back of the curtain as well to ensure a secure bond and a flat finish.

Final Thoughts

This is an easy, low-cost way to create custom-looking curtains without sewing or special tools. Trim tape transforms simple panels into tailored window treatments that reflect your color story and style. Once the rest of the dining room is complete, the trimmed curtains will feel like an intentional, cohesive part of the design.

How to Hang Curtains to Make a Room Look Larger

Where you hang your curtains matters. The “high and wide” rule is a simple way to make windows and rooms feel bigger: mount the rod 4–6 inches above the window frame and extend the rod 3–6 inches beyond the window sides. This creates the illusion of larger windows and taller ceilings.

Also consider curtain length: if you open and close them frequently, leave 1/4–1/2 inch between the hem and floor. For a more luxurious look, allow curtains to “puddle” on the floor by 6–8 inches.
