Green and Navy Christmas Mantel Inspiration 2018

Green and Navy Christmas Mantel Inspired by a Christmas Tree Farm

The natural textures and colors of greenery lend a cozy, festive feel to this Christmas Tree Farm–inspired mantel.

Every year I try to create a mantel look that I’ll still love weeks later. I see this view daily while the decorations are up, so I want it to feel right. Some seasons I nail it, and other seasons I’m still figuring things out. This year I’m truly happy with the result: a layered look of navy, green, lots of greenery and a nod to a country tree farm.

The centerpiece is a farm-fresh sign I made last year. It was the jumping-off point for this year’s styling, and I love how the rustic sign reads with the darker navy tones and fresh greenery. The small trees flanking the sign complete the Christmas Tree Farm vibe.

Full disclosure: I’ve never actually visited a Christmas tree farm — our tree has always been artificial — but I draw inspiration from the textures, colors and simplicity of that aesthetic. If anything, decorating with this style might convince me to visit a real farm someday.

The faux trees in galvanized tins that sit to the left and right of the sign were on my wish list last season and sold out before I could get them. I was thrilled to find them back in stock this year. If you see pieces you love for a future season, it’s worth grabbing them early.

I also fell in love with a planter-style stocking holder early in the season and debated building my own. I have made similar planter boxes before, but the store version had details I really liked. I waited for a sale and then bought it. The online photos showed labels on the hooks that spelled “HOME,” but the actual piece arrived without them, so I printed letters in the Abraham Lincoln font at size 100 and tucked them into the hooks for the exact look I wanted.

It’s fun to compare this year’s mantel to last year’s. Besides changing the decor, we updated the living room with bamboo shades, a new rug and some replacement chairs. Small changes like these make a big difference in how the space feels, and they help the mantel styling stand out.

This year’s approach was intentionally simpler—no excessive photo-shoot props or stacks of wrapped gifts—because real life is busy and I haven’t finished Christmas shopping yet. The simple presentation keeps the mantel feeling warm and approachable while still being styled.

One of my favorite small details in the room is a basket at the base of the mirror that belongs to my three-year-old. She keeps a few ornaments in it and loves arranging them on the lower branches of the tree throughout the day. That’s why the bottom of our tree is filled with non-breakable, kid-friendly ornaments—practical and sentimental at the same time.

We still have a few home projects on the list—like updating the fireplace tile and finding a coffee table—but it feels good to have made progress this year. The refreshed textiles, new shades and a few well-chosen accessories helped the living room come together and made the mantel feel intentional.

Merry Christmas from our family to yours! May your holidays be cozy, bright and filled with the small moments that make this season special.
