Christmas Home Tour 2013: Pretty in Plaid

Although the name of my blog evokes turquoise, this year my Christmas leaned into classic reds and greens. I usually enjoy playful, unexpected color palettes—hot pinks, bright blues, and yes, lots of turquoise—but this season I felt drawn to a traditional, cozy aesthetic. The result is a warm, homey holiday look built around plaid, soft metallics, and natural, woodsy touches.

Plaid became my recurring motif. Whether draped over a chair, layered on a sofa, or tied into bows, plaid instantly reads as rustic and timeless. It pairs beautifully with evergreen sprigs, burlap textures, and simple wooden accents to create a welcoming, lived-in holiday atmosphere that feels both familiar and festive.

I also brought in small doses of metallics to brighten the overall palette. Mercury glass ornaments and vases are subtle but effective: they add soft reflections and a hint of holiday sparkle without overwhelming the traditional color scheme. Scattering a few metallic pieces among greenery or on a focal table gives the room an elevated, elegant touch.

Lighting is key to creating that cozy holiday mood. A crackling fire, soft lamp light, and lots of twinkle lights help transform a space into somewhere you want to linger. Pour a cup of tea or coffee—peppermint mocha creamer is my seasonal favorite—and take a slow walk through each room to enjoy the details.

Welcome to my holiday home tour. I’ll share how plaid, mercury glass, and layered textures come together to create a cohesive, traditional Christmas look that still feels fresh and personal.

For a little evening magic, I took a night shot to showcase the twinkle lights and warm glow. Photographing lights at night can transform ordinary decorations into something very special—my friend Jackie at Teal & Lime gave me helpful tips on how to capture those small sparkles effectively.
