Take a look at my new charcoal dining room wall color — it really brings the farmhouse decor to life!
Yesterday I dug into this paint choice — Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal — and today I’m sharing the full reveal of how it looks on my dining room walls. This deep, neutral charcoal instantly changed the mood of the space and elevated the farmhouse pieces I already owned.
When we moved in, the room wore a bright pistachio green from the previous owners. It felt out of place and was one of the first things I saw from my office, so repainting quickly became a priority.

I’ve admired Kendall Charcoal for years. I first spotted it on cabinets in a kitchen I loved, and it’s been on my “someday” list ever since. Seeing it used in dining rooms with white trim convinced me even more that this deep gray would look stunning in my home.

New House, New Colors
In my old dining room I had wainscoting and Wythe Blue on the walls, which I adored and never changed. Moving into this new house felt like the perfect opportunity to be bolder. I considered painting everything — including trim — in Kendall Charcoal, but ultimately chose to paint just the upper half of the walls. That compromise preserved some contrast and helped the room feel balanced.

I’m thrilled with the result. The charcoal creates a cozy, sophisticated backdrop that makes the farmhouse table, wood tones, and brass details really pop. It’s quickly become one of my favorite rooms, and I love seeing it from my office while I work.

All of the furniture in the room came from my previous house, and even the brass chandelier I planned to replace now feels right against the charcoal backdrop. I still plan to swap it for another fixture down the line, likely a gold-tone option that will harmonize with the dark walls and add warmth.

Gray Walls Do Work in a Dining Room
Some decorators suggest avoiding gray in dining rooms, but I believe the right charcoal can be striking. Kendall Charcoal provides depth without feeling cold; paired with the right furniture, lighting, and accents, it becomes a dramatic and elegant foundation.
I’m excited to introduce color accents and artwork to this space. There’s a large wall across from the windows that’s begging for a statement piece, and I’ve been considering a rug and layered textiles to soften the floor. Decorating is a patient process — some items are waiting in my cart — but the painted walls already feel finished and intentional.

I’m tackling one room at a time — my office comes first — but until then I’ll enjoy these charcoal walls and the way they make the existing decor shine. Have you tried a bold, dark color in your home? It can be surprising how transformative a strong paint choice can be.
Take a Look at It Now!
After moving in, I realized some of my previous furniture didn’t suit the new space. I sold some pieces and inherited a traditional dining set from my grandmother, which prompted a new layout and a refreshed style to match the furniture’s scale and character.
