I love this quick, easy update—adding old-house charm with affordable schoolhouse lighting! Most of the fixtures I found were $50 or less, which makes the transformation budget-friendly and fast.

When we moved into a beige, builder-grade foreclosure, I knew one of the first things I wanted to change was the lighting. Over the years I’ve been slowly replacing fixtures throughout the house, focusing on simple, affordable swaps that make a big visual impact. Five years in, we’ve updated several areas, including the kitchen, but the hallways still needed attention.
Because we’re on a budget, progress has been gradual—and that’s okay. Small changes here and there add up, and I’m happy with how our home is evolving.
We inherited the common, dated flush-mount fixtures in our hallways when we moved in. They worked, but they weren’t my style and the look didn’t match the cozy, vintage vibe I wanted to bring into the house.
The original flush-mounts weren’t awful, but after living with them for a while I wanted something with more character—something that felt like it belonged in an older home, even though our house was built more recently.

Back in 2012 I removed the original flush-mount and installed an IKEA Ribba gallery wall and a track light system to update the hallway. At the time I was still figuring out my style and trying to combine pieces I loved from stores into a cohesive look for our home.
While I still like the gallery frames, the track lighting became a problem. The bulbs were nonstandard and only available at the store, and when my husband accidentally unscrewed one of the track heads it stopped working. Over time the other bulbs burned out and I never replaced them. The hallway sat dark for months—uncomfortable and gloomy.
I wanted to replace the modern track light with something that felt timeless and brought warmth back into the hall. Farmhouse- or schoolhouse-style fixtures have a classic look that adds instant character—something the modern track light or generic flush-mount simply couldn’t deliver.
I found an affordable schoolhouse pendant that fit the space perfectly. It’s simple, charming, and surprisingly inexpensive. The installation was straightforward, and the fixture instantly warmed up the hallway.

You’ll notice the white ring around the old flush mount—I quickly painted that spot with the nearest white I had on hand. The sheen isn’t a perfect match, but it improves the look until I repaint the ceilings properly.
I was initially worried a single-bulb schoolhouse light wouldn’t provide enough illumination, but it turned out to be perfect for the space. It’s bright enough at night, and the light quality is warm and inviting—exactly what the hallway needed.
