Affordable Winter Jeans and Cozy Sweaters

I’ve discovered some stylish, budget-friendly winter fashion finds you’re going to love.

While I enjoy the warmer seasons, my wardrobe truly comes alive in cooler weather. Sweater season is my favorite — it’s comfortable, cozy, and perfect for layering.

Over the past few seasons I’ve been impressed by the quality and style available at Walmart. Prices are reasonable and many pieces look and feel more expensive than they are. I even wore a Walmart dress to a summer wedding and felt great — comfortable and confident — and it was only $30.

For reference: I’m 5’7″ and typically wear XL tops, 14–16 in jeans, and a size 11 shoe.

Last winter I picked up a cozy sweater that remains a wardrobe staple, so this year I added a few more key pieces to expand my cold-weather looks. I was especially on the hunt for a pretty green sweater for holiday and winter wear — and I found one I love.

I ordered three tops from the Free Assembly line and they were all cute and well made. I also tried a couple of Levi Strauss jeans in straight and bootcut fits that feel comparable to my higher-priced denim. Below I’ll share what I bought, how it fits, and a few outfit ideas you can recreate.

First up is a mid-weight green cable-knit sweater. It comes in several colors, including a deep merlot red. The fabric weight is light-to-mid, making it ideal for layering under blazers, vests, and jackets. I paired this sweater with flare jeans (I wore a size 14 Plus) and wedge faux-leather boots. The look is casual but polished — perfect for everyday winter wear or low-key holiday gatherings. I sized up in this sweater to avoid a clingy fit, and the slightly roomier silhouette is very flattering.

A second favorite is an oversized cable-knit mock-neck from the Time & Tru brand. It’s soft, cozy, and carries an elevated look despite the budget-friendly price. I styled it with black leggings and Chelsea boots for a relaxed, chic outfit. If you wear thicker socks or have wider ankles, consider sizing up in the shoe; otherwise the sweater fits true to size.

I also tried a pair of bootcut jeans that have the weight and stretch I expect from higher-end denim. They pair beautifully with ankle boots and create a balanced silhouette with chunkier sweaters. For a sleeker silhouette I picked up straight-leg jeans and cuffed the hem to show a ballet flat or ankle boot.

One of the standout sweater options I purchased is a Fair Isle knit. It’s soft, warm, and features neutral tones that will carry through the season — wear it from December into February and even early spring. The mock/turtleneck sits comfortably without feeling too snug; I prefer tucking the neckline slightly for a neater look. This sweater runs true to size.

For a slightly dressier option, I chose a heavy-weight satin flutter-sleeve top and paired it with straight-leg jeans and a gold-embellished ballet flat slipper. This pairing feels festive and daytime-appropriate for holiday events. If it’s chilly, layer a cardigan or jacket and add a statement earring to finish the look.
