Christmas Kitchen 2018: Festive Recipes and Holiday Menu

‘Tis the season to deck the halls, the walls, the shelves, and the mantels. The anticipation of Christmas is finally in the air, and I love dressing our home in hopeful expectation with cheery pops of red, natural swaths of greenery, and cozy textures. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Please, pull up a seat at my kitchen table—virtually—and enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate with me. I’m excited to share this year’s Christmas kitchen tour. Decorating this room brings me so much joy, and I hope it inspires a few ideas for your own home.

For years I didn’t decorate the kitchen much because I didn’t love the room. When I painted the cabinets white a few years ago, everything changed—suddenly the kitchen felt inviting and bright, and I’ve been decorating it every season since. A little paint truly goes a long way.

Wreaths on the cabinets are a simple, beautiful detail that add depth and charm to the kitchen.

This year I also refreshed our little eat-in area, which made decorating it even more fun. Small updates to a space can make holiday decor feel fresh and new.

I always begin by styling my open kitchen shelves. This year I cleared everything off and started fresh, mixing new finds with treasured pieces. I originally planned a different color direction, but when I mentioned painting my “JOY” sign navy, so many readers asked me to keep it red that I decided to leave it as-is. My sister-in-law joked that leaving it unpainted would save time, and I ended up embracing more red than usual in the kitchen.

I mixed vintage-style jar candles into the display for a warm, nostalgic glow.

Normally I steer away from bold red—my home usually favors blues and greens—partly because red is a color associated with a local football team we don’t cheer for. Still, this year the red felt festive and welcoming, and I enjoyed incorporating it alongside my usual palette. The result is a classic, slightly more traditional holiday look in the kitchen while the living room remains more blue-and-green focused.

A playful highlight: if you look closely at the tree on the mantel, you might spot our very special Elf on the Shelf—my daughters are obsessed with him!

I kept several favorite elements from last year—like the canisters that hold miniature Christmas village sets—because they bring so much charm and personality to the counters. My coffee station also gets a holiday update; last season I found adorable seasonal mugs that make a cozy cup of hot chocolate feel extra special.

I’ve added a few new touches this year: faux paperwhites, a beautiful wooden-and-metal cake stand, and wreaths on the kitchen cabinet doors. Faux paperwhites give the winter kitchen a soft, elegant look and are perfect if you prefer a no-fuss option that stays fresh-looking all season.

The cake stand was a last-minute add to my collection because I wanted something more substantial than the plain one I had. It’s nicely made and looks gorgeous as a centerpiece on the counter. The wreaths I added to the cabinet doors were an affordable find and instantly elevated the space; I’ll keep them for seasons to come.

I also repurposed some older faux wreaths as hanging greenery ornaments on my chalkboard, which adds a simple, whimsical touch that I love.

Thank you so much for touring my kitchen this season. I hope these ideas spark a few fresh ways to bring holiday cheer into your own home—whether you prefer traditional reds and greens or a quieter winter palette of blues and greenery.
