Holiday Shopping Strategies to Save Time and Money

I could have titled this: How to Avoid Missing the Best Holiday Finds!

I know—it’s barely fall and Halloween hasn’t even arrived, but holiday decor is already moving fast. You’ve probably heard reports about popular items selling out early this season. Supply chain issues over the last few years mean inventory can be limited, and the most sought-after pieces often disappear by October.

That’s why a little advance planning pays off. If there’s something you really want—a new artificial tree, a special garland, or standout ornaments—start shopping now. The best items tend to sell out early, and waiting can leave you scrambling later.

Top Holiday Decor Sell-Outs Every Year

Right now most holiday items are available, but many will go out of stock in late October or early November. If you’re thinking about a new artificial tree or signature Christmas decor, don’t wait—shop while selections and prices are still favorable.

I usually show my living room Christmas tree (pictured below), but this particular tree is unusually expensive this year, so I may wait for a sale. If you want a beautiful pre-lit tree, consider alternatives that sell quickly each season.

A great option I recommend is the LED twinkle-light tree that sold out quickly last year. It offers both warm white and colorful light settings, is easy to assemble, and comes in several sizes—perfect if you want a show-stopping tree without the long lead time.

Below are the items I frequently recommend and that tend to sell out early each year. If any are on your wish list, consider snagging them now while they’re still in stock and before prices climb.

  • ‘Feel Real’ Pre-lit Artificial Christmas Tree – A gorgeous, realistic tree I’ve loved in my living room. It has increased in price since I purchased mine, so if you see it close to the price I paid, consider buying it.
  • Woven Tree Collar – My current favorite square tree collar. It’s a popular choice and often sells out quickly.
  • Scalloped Woven Tree Collar – A lovely alternative if the first collar is gone; slightly pricier but worth considering as a second option.

  • Hanging Iron Bells – Charming on wreaths and garlands. These are often available earlier in the season but can jump in price later, so grab them now if you love the look.
  • Real Touch Norfolk Pine Garland – I layer this over simpler garlands on the mantel for a lush look. It’s a popular item that can sell out or increase in price as the season progresses.

  • Pine Tree Reversible Towels – A favorite for adding a seasonal touch to bathrooms. They’re reversible, so they last through the winter and make an easy, festive swap.
  • Mercury Glass Adorned Ornaments – Quality ornaments can be hard to find late in the season. These make a beautiful bowl display when paired with mini mercury glass ornaments.

  • Stewart Plaid Duvet Cover and Pillow Shams – I use this plaid bedding in my bedroom and adore it. When I first shopped for it, I had to hunt to find matching shams—don’t make the same mistake; order now while sizes remain available.
  • Enchanted Woods Plates & Mugs – Holiday plates and mugs are great for table settings and coffee stations. They tend to sell out in November, so grab them early if you want coordinated holiday dishware.
  • Tabletop Christmas Trees – Small trees are a versatile way to add seasonal decor throughout the home. There are affordable options and pre-lit faux potted trees that look great on side tables and counters.

I’m not decorating yet—I’m ordering items now and storing them until November. Buying ahead avoids frustrating shipping delays and sold-out items. If you’re on the fence about something, buy it and return it later if it doesn’t work out; often I wish I had purchased more!

Stores to Watch Closely

Knowing when stores release their holiday inventory helps you get ahead of sellouts. Many retailers don’t restock holiday items, so when they’re gone they’re often gone for the season. Below are stores I watch closely each year.

  • McGee & Co. – An eclectic holiday selection with ornaments and wall decor I often add to my cart.
  • Target – Affordable and accessible decor. Collections like Hearth and Hand with Magnolia and Studio McGee sell out quickly; use “notify me when it’s back” if an item is temporarily out of stock.
  • Brooke & Lou – A small business with unique pieces. Some items are pricey and others are great value—shop thoughtfully.
  • Pottery Barn – A reliable spot for classic holiday decor that often sells out early.
  • Ballard Designs – I’ve been shopping here more for traditional decor that fits my home.
  • Cailini Coastal – Great for coastal-inspired holiday accents and specialty ribbons.

Shopping for Others

Don’t forget gifts—start checking off names on your list now. I’ve compiled more than a dozen gift guides for men, women, kids, teachers, and more. With shipping delays likely and limited quantities expected, buy gifts you already know you need so you’re not caught short later.
