DIY Heart Pillow Cover with Fabric Applique and Silhouette Cameo

These are the simplest, cutest pillows—neutral fabric covers embellished with soft heart appliqués that work beautifully for Valentine’s Day or any other season. We made a no-sew fabric appliqué using a Silhouette Cameo, so the project is fast, forgiving, and great for beginners or hobby crafters.

Because the hearts are in neutral tones, the pillows can stay on a sofa or porch bench long after the holiday. If you prefer, use reds and pinks for a traditional Valentine’s look—either way, they’re adorable and easy to customize.

My friend Emily made these to decorate her front porch and I love how they turned out—simple, charming, and weather-appropriate when kept under a covered entryway.

What You’ll Need to Make an Easy DIY Heart Pillow Cover

  • Pillow cover (you can sew one yourself or use a store-bought cover)
  • Scrap fabrics for the hearts (mix textures and neutrals for depth)
  • Silhouette Cameo or another fabric-cutting machine
  • Heat ‘n Bond Ultra Hold iron-on adhesive (or comparable fusible web)
  • Household iron or a small heat press
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread (optional, for stitching around appliqués)
  • Sewable fabric interfacing or fabric stabilizer (if not using iron-on adhesive)

How to Make an Easy DIY Heart Pillow Cover

1. Make your pillow cover (or buy one)

Pillow covers are one of the easiest sewing projects and an inexpensive way to update a room. If you sew, a simple envelope-style cover in drop cloth or canvas gives a relaxed, neutral base that complements the appliqués. If sewing isn’t your thing, ready-made covers work perfectly—just choose a fabric that will take heat when you iron on the appliqués.

2. Gather scrap fabrics you like

Use scraps from previous projects, fat quarter bundles, or small cuts from a fabric store. For versatility, pick neutral tones and a few contrasting textures—linen, cotton, and lightweight canvas all work well. Smaller hearts can be cut from patterned scraps for a playful look, while larger hearts read best in solid or subtly textured fabrics.

3. Apply Heat ‘n Bond or another fusible backing

Iron the fusible web to the back of each fabric scrap before cutting. This backing stabilizes the fabric so it cuts cleanly and prevents fraying. Using a strong adhesive like Heat ‘n Bond Ultra Hold usually means you won’t need to stitch the edges after pressing; the appliqués will remain secure and are typically machine-washable when applied correctly. If you prefer not to use fusible web, sewable interfacing or a fabric stiffener spray are good alternatives to add stability before cutting.

Tip: Prewash and press your base pillow fabric so the finished pillow won’t shift or shrink after the appliqués are attached. Also cut slightly larger shapes if you plan to stitch around the edges for decorative effect.

4. Choose a heart shape and cut it with your Silhouette Cameo

Select a simple heart shape from your machine’s design library or import a basic heart outline. Resize the shape to suit your pillow—one large heart looks striking on a single cover, while multiple smaller hearts create a charming clustered pattern on another. With the fusible backing in place, the fabric will feed cleanly through the cutter and produce crisp edges.

5. Adhere the hearts to the pillow covers

Position your cut hearts on the pillow cover until you’re happy with the layout. Press each piece with a hot iron or a heat press, following the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. Press firmly and hold in place for the recommended time to ensure a strong bond. If you like a handmade stitched detail, use a zig-zag or straight stitch around the edge of the hearts—this adds texture and secures the appliqué even more.

6. Stuff the pillows and display them

Insert pillow inserts that are slightly larger than the cover size for a plump, finished look. Arrange the pillows on a bench, porch seat, or sofa—neutral heart designs work well with seasonal accents like a cozy throw or a wreath. Emily’s porch bench is a great example of how rescued furniture and simple handmade pillows combine to create welcoming curb appeal.

This project is quick, accessible, and ideal for using up fabric scraps. If you already have the materials, you can finish a pillow or two in an afternoon—and the results are charming and versatile.
