DIY Cathedral Window Frame for Your Fixer-Upper

This DIY Fixer Upper-style cathedral window frame is an affordable way to create a beautiful focal piece for your home. It’s an easy project even if you don’t build the frame from scratch — I ordered an unfinished arch-shaped frame and finished it myself to achieve a rustic farmhouse look that suits my mantel perfectly.

I love how this cathedral window frame looks propped on the mantel. I finished mine in a faded, slightly antiqued style and topped it with a classic Magnolia Market magnolia wreath to complete the Fixer Upper-inspired vibe. A faux magnolia wreath is a great finishing touch because it looks natural and keeps the look low-maintenance.

For years I’ve decorated with old windows, using them as a large backdrop on the mantel. Lately I wanted something with an arched silhouette — the cathedral window shape — which adds height and architectural interest, whether you use it above a mantel or as a headboard alternative.

I originally spotted a similar arched window in the Magnolia Home collection and loved the aged finish. When I found it out of stock (and expensive when available), I searched for alternatives and discovered that unfinished cathedral window cutouts sold online are a budget-friendly option. They come either unfinished or with a one-color stain, so I bought an unfinished version and did my own finishing work to get the worn, layered look I wanted.

I treated this project like an art piece rather than trying to produce an exact replica of the store version. That meant experimenting with layering stain, paint, and wax until I found an aged finish that felt right for my home. The result is uniquely mine — and that’s the beauty of DIY.

My finished frame looks different from the store-bought versions, but I love it because it reflects my personal style. If you decide to make one, don’t be afraid to embrace your own color choices and finishing techniques.

Here’s how I finished mine and some tips to help you create your own DIY cathedral window frame for a mantel, headboard, or wall decor.

Project Supplies Needed for DIY Cathedral Window Frame:

  • Unfinished arched/window frame cutout — I purchased mine unfinished online
  • Wood stain in your preferred shade (I used Provincial by Minwax)
  • Clear finishing wax
  • White paint for whitewashing
  • Small craft foam brush(s) and a dry brush for detailing
  • Clean, soft rags for wiping stain and buffing wax
  • Optional: D-rings, picture wire, or a French cleat for hanging

Step 1 — Stain the Frame. Start by applying a wood stain to the unfinished frame. I used a medium-dark stain (Provincial) and applied it with a small craft brush, then wiped excess off with an old rag to reveal the wood grain. Always test the stain on the back of the frame or a scrap piece first so you’re happy with the shade before finishing the visible surfaces.

Step 2 — Create an Aged Whitewash with Wax. Mix a little white paint with clear finishing wax and apply it over the stained frame. Work in small sections, rubbing the mixture into the wood and then wiping or buffing to reveal the stain underneath. Use more paint in areas where you want a stronger whitewashed look, and a dry brush technique for subtle streaks and texture. The wax helps seal the paint and gives a soft, natural sheen while allowing the under-stain to show through.

Step 3 — Add Final Details and Hang. Let the finish cure per the wax manufacturer’s instructions, then add your hanging hardware. For heavier frames, I recommend installing sturdy D-rings with picture wire or mounting a French cleat for the most secure installation. Once it’s hung, style it with a wreath, garland, or layered artwork in front to personalize the look.

A magnolia wreath is an easy and elegant complement to the cathedral window frame and works across seasons. For a more layered mantel, combine the arch with greenery, candles, or other vintage finds.

This project also forms the foundation for my holiday mantel—watch for a full Christmas reveal soon.

Tips and variations: Try different stains or tinted waxes for warmer or cooler tones. For a more rustic finish, sand edges lightly after painting to reveal layers. If you prefer a crisper, cleaner look, skip the whitewash and finish with a clear polyurethane instead of wax. And if you have a jigsaw and want to make your own frame, many people cut the arch shape from plywood or reclaimed wood and build a custom mullion pattern for a personalized result.
