The Turquoise Home: Why I Chose the Name and What It Represents

In one of the very first posts on this site, I explained why I named this blog The Turquoise Home. Since then the name has continued to capture the spirit of this space—my approach to decorating, the colors I favor, and the way I want our house to feel. Below I expand on that idea and share what makes turquoise so meaningful to me, along with why the word “home” matters just as much.

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”
– Shakespeare

A name carries weight. It can communicate a mood, a style, and an invitation. When visitors hear “The Turquoise Home,” I want them to picture calm, coastal color, thoughtful design, and a warm, lived-in atmosphere. It’s a concise way to express my aesthetic and the values behind the way I decorate and care for our space.

Why Turquoise?

Turquoise: I love blue—especially turquoise. It appears in small ways and large throughout our house: my china is turquoise, the dining room and guest bathroom are painted in turquoise tones, and many accessories reflect that watery, serene hue. Turquoise feels connected to the ocean, which I adore, and it brings a soothing, uplifting energy to a room. For me, it’s a color that balances freshness with comfort.

That said, calling the blog The Turquoise Home doesn’t mean everything here is one color. I incorporate a full palette—reds, oranges, pinks, greens, yellows, neutrals like black, brown, and gray—as accents and foundations. The goal is a layered, harmonious look where turquoise serves as a signature note rather than a strict rule. You might notice I rarely use purple; it’s just not my favorite, even though it’s close to blue on the spectrum.

Why Home?

Home: The word “home” is deeply meaningful. It’s a privilege to have a place where family and friends can gather, rest, and feel safe. For me, our home is a refuge—a cozy, familiar environment where our daughter can grow up surrounded by consistent routines and loving care. It’s a place where my husband and I can slow down, connect, and enjoy simple evenings together. Decorating is not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating an atmosphere that supports relationships and daily life.

Design choices are intentional here: I choose colors, textures, and pieces that make our home feel like a sanctuary while reflecting personality. Whether it’s a turquoise accent wall or a brightly colored pillow, each element contributes to a balanced, welcoming space that’s both beautiful and practical.
