This is the season to slow down, set aside the frenzy, and savor the simple moments. My holiday to-do list is nearly complete, so I’m ready to curl up on the couch, put on Elf, and sip rich hot chocolate. Those few quiet days before Christmas are my favorite — a time to settle in and prepare our hearts and home for the celebration of the newborn King.

For me, “Peace on Earth” is the mood I aim to create. Nothing feels more peaceful than a silent night and the soft twinkle of lights. Join me as I sit beside the tree and share some holiday thoughts in an interview-style tour of our decorated home.

I wanted this year’s tour to feel like a cozy conversation in the living room, so I tried a slightly different format — an informal Q&A while we sit by candlelight. Pour yourself a cup of cocoa or cider, pull up a chair, and let’s chat about holiday decorating, traditions, and favorite recipes.

Q: Do you decorate differently every year? What inspired this year’s decor theme?

I like to freshen things up each year while still using many of the pieces I love. Last year I did a thorough declutter and removed items I hadn’t used in a long time, which made unpacking the decorations this season so much easier — it was just the things I truly enjoy. I ended up changing my main tree’s style this year, so a bin of previously used ornaments stayed tucked away. I’ll continue to pare down what I didn’t use so storage stays manageable, and I often donate extras to the local thrift store so someone else can enjoy them next year.

This season I challenged myself to lean into neutrals paired with unexpected accent colors like navy and soft pink. I avoided the orange I usually use in fall and kept reds to a minimum, focusing instead on layered textures and subtle palettes that feel calm and sophisticated. The Flocked Farmhouse tree concept came from an appreciation for natural stems like cotton and lamb’s ear, which add quiet texture and a cozy farmhouse vibe.

Q: Where do you save and where do you splurge on holiday decor? Do you include DIY projects?

I try to be practical — I save wherever I can and take on DIY projects when they offer strong value. Handmade oversized art is an area where DIY really pays off, since large ready-made pieces can be expensive. For example, the big wooden art on my mantel was a DIY project that gave the space personality without the big price tag. When an item can be recreated with time and a few supplies, I’ll usually make it myself.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday recipe?

Though I adore hot chocolate and spiced apple cider, nothing beats a pan of fresh, homemade cinnamon rolls straight from the oven. These are our Christmas morning tradition, a recipe passed down from my great-grandmother that has become a cherished family ritual. The aroma alone makes the morning feel special.

You can find the cinnamon roll recipe on my recipe collection if you’d like to try making them at home.

Q: Do you have favorite holiday traditions?

I have many small traditions that feel completely normal to our family but are special when I think about them: attending the Christmas Eve church service, giving the girls new pajamas on Christmas Eve, sharing cinnamon rolls and sausage balls on Christmas morning, and baking holiday cookies with my mom during the week before Christmas. We also enjoy movie nights throughout December — piling on the couch to watch seasonal favorites is a simple joy we all look forward to.

Q: What are your favorite holiday movies?

Elf is my perennial favorite — it just doesn’t feel like Christmas unless I watch it. I also enjoy The Family Stone for its large-family dynamics, Four Christmases for laughs, and The Holiday when I want a quiet, reflective movie while wrapping gifts late at night.

Q: What’s at the top of your Christmas list?

Practical items top my wish list this year: a robot vacuum would be a game-changer for keeping floors tidy with a two-year-old in the house, a quality pair of riding boots for the season, and a reliable label maker to quickly organize bins and baskets around the home.
