Add big style to a small bathroom using budget-friendly updates: bright paint, personality-filled flooring and charming accessories. A few simple changes can transform the space into one you’ll love.
Here’s the reveal of the girls’ bathroom refresh. With a few thoughtful updates—none involving major demolition—we made a tight bathroom feel larger, lighter and much more inviting.
I always begin each project with the end in mind, so I created a mood board for this refresh and stuck with that vision until the room was finished.

The goal was simple: add character and useful function without filling the space with bulky items. Because this bathroom is compact, every addition had to earn its place. I relied on finishes, color and select accessories to bring personality without crowding the room.
How to Create Big Style in a Small Bathroom
Below are the strategies I used to maximize style and function in this small bathroom.
1. Make the Floor the Star
In a tiny bathroom, a striking floor can create instant impact. I chose peel-and-stick vinyl tiles with a bold pattern to give the room a defined focal point without a big budget or big disruption.

These tiles were easy to install, have held up well so far and gave the space the “wow” factor it needed. If you want a dramatic change with minimal fuss, patterned peel-and-stick tiles are an excellent option.
Other affordable flooring ideas can also help you change the look without breaking the bank.
2. Update the Lighting
Lighting can age a room quickly. You can either replace the entire fixture or update the shades on an existing one. For this bathroom, I swapped the dated shades for modern glass globes to freshen the vanity area.

Tip: measure both width and depth when buying replacement shades so they sit evenly. I learned that the hard way when one shade stuck out a bit farther than the others.
3. Add Smart, Vertical Storage
In small bathrooms, vertical storage is key. Hooks, wall shelves, over-the-toilet shelving and shower caddies keep items off counters and floors while remaining accessible.

For my daughters, a towel bar placed too high was impractical, so I installed hooks at a reachable height. To keep things visually interesting, I mounted the hooks on a board-and-batten treatment that adds both color and texture.

If you need more storage, an over-the-toilet shelf or cabinet works well. Even a decorative basket on the tank can hold extra toilet paper or small items and keep counters tidy.
4. Add Personality with Art and Decor
Finishing touches—signs, framed art, wreaths and architectural accents—give a room its personality. I removed the old photos and curated a mix of graphic signs, floral art, an antique-style window frame and a eucalyptus wreath to balance the space.

Varying accessory styles keeps the decor interesting—mix typographic signs with floral prints, wooden accents and greenery for a layered, cohesive look.
Charming items used in this refresh:
- Wood cut-out sign with an encouraging message
- Antique arched window frame as architectural decor
- Eucalyptus wreath for texture and scent
- Playful graphic sign with a bath-related phrase
- Scented candles in clean, fresh fragrances
- Large floral artwork to anchor a wall
- Faux boxwood in a galvanized bucket for rustic greenery
- Pink towels and coordinating bath mats to introduce color
The pink towels and mats added a cheerful pop of color that feels perfect for a girls’ bathroom.
5. Brighten the Room with Paint
Painting walls in a light, airy hue instantly opens a compact space. Since this bathroom receives no natural light, I used a very pale white to reflect light and visually expand the room.

With white walls, the rest of the decor can add color where you want it—like the board-and-batten treatment I added for a splash of contrast and personality.
6. Frame the Builder-Grade Mirror
Rather than removing a large builder-grade mirror, add a simple custom frame. A few boards, glue and paint transform a plain mirror into a finished focal point without a large expense.
A custom mirror frame is an easy DIY that elevates the vanity instantly.
Before and After
The bathroom was functional before, but it lacked cohesion and personality. With a focused plan—new floor, fresh paint, updated lighting, practical storage and layered accessories—we turned it into a bright, welcoming room that reflects our style.

Now the space feels light, intentional and much more suited to our family. My girls love the new look, and it’s amazing how a few affordable updates can deliver such a big change.

Photography in small, windowless rooms can be tricky, but improved lighting and contrast made it easier to capture the updated space. Little details like a framed mirror, layered art and reachable hooks make daily routines smoother for kids and adults alike.
