Spring Is Here! Refresh your front porch with the latest & cutest spring doormats!
A few years ago I decided to update my front doormat situation and fell in love with the layered look: a larger outdoor rug topped with a smaller decorative doormat. The combination gives the front stoop a finished, intentional feel and turns an otherwise bland entry into an extension of the home. Layering is a simple trick that instantly lifts curb appeal and welcomes guests with personality.

For the cooler months I used a typographical doormat that read “Come in + Get Cozy.” It was the perfect choice for winter and the dreary season—warm, welcoming, and a little cheeky. Paired with a plaid black-and-cream outdoor rug, it created a cozy layered vignette that fit the house’s style and scale. I chose a 2’7″ x 5′ rug size that fit my stoop perfectly.
But as spring arrived and temperatures warmed up, that “get cozy” sentiment felt out of season. I snapped a few photos of a new spring wreath I’d hung and realized my top mat needed a lighter, fresher message and look. So I switched out the cozy mat and stored it away for cooler weather.

If you’re thinking of updating your porch for spring, here are a few practical tips I leaned on while choosing my spring doormat:
- Choose a cheerful message or motif: Spring mats often feature florals, playful type, or seasonal greetings. A simple, positive phrase or a botanical pattern instantly brightens the entry.
- Match scale to the space: Make sure your larger outdoor rug fits the stoop and your top doormat sits comfortably centered. Layer proportions should feel balanced—neither piece should overpower the other.
- Pick durable materials: Outdoor rugs and doormats should resist moisture and stand up to foot traffic. Coir, rubber-backed mats, and weather-resistant woven rugs are good choices.
- Think about color and contrast: A neutral base rug with a colorful top mat—or vice versa—creates visual interest. Consider the color of your door and siding when selecting hues.
- Seasonal storage: Keep a few mats on hand and rotate them by season. Store off-season mats in a dry place so they stay fresh.
I haven’t settled on a single favorite spring mat yet—there are so many cute options. I may end up sharing my final pick in an upcoming spring home tour. If you enjoy DIY projects, I also made my own spring doormat a few years back and documented the step-by-step process in a full tutorial.
