Refresh your built-in bookshelves for summer with a simple blue-and-white palette. Here are easy styling tips and ideas to create a light, breezy look you’ll love.

Summer always nudges me toward lighter textures and fresher colors — from breezy throw pillows to seasonal meals featuring fresh fruit and grilled favorites. This year I focused on a small but impactful corner of our living room: the built-in bookshelves. They had collected winter layers and lingering spring clutter, so I cleared everything away and restyled the shelves with one of my favorite combinations: blue and white. It’s timeless, crisp, and perfect for a calm summer vibe.

Here’s how I gave my built-ins a summery update:
1. Cleared the Shelves
The first step was simple but essential: I removed everything. Emptying the shelves creates a clean canvas and lets you evaluate each item objectively. When restyling, I recommend sorting pieces into three piles — keep, store, donate — so you only display what suits the season and the room’s current mood. Clearing also reveals spacing and light, which helps when deciding where taller pieces or groupings should go.
2. Layered in Blue & White Pieces
I selected a handful of blue-and-white accents: ginger jars, picture frames, and a couple of thrifted bowls. These pieces introduce color without overwhelming the shelves. To build visual interest, mix finishes — glossy ceramics with matte frames or a metallic accent — and vary scale. Stack books horizontally, lean framed photos or prints against the back of a shelf, and balance larger items with clusters of smaller objects.

Styling tip: Group items in threes or fives and play with height. Three small objects clustered together can have as much impact as a single large piece. Leave some breathing room around each grouping so the display feels intentional, not crowded.
3. Added Natural Texture
To warm the blue-and-white palette and avoid a too-cold or clinical feel, I introduced natural textures: a woven lampshade, a rattan planter, a piece of driftwood, and a small wooden box. Natural elements bring depth and create a relaxed, summery mood. Textured items also help connect the shelves to other elements in the room, like wicker chairs or a wood coffee table.

4. Brought in Life
Greenery, even faux, instantly enlivens a shelf. I tucked in a small faux fern, a trailing pothos, and a few summery plants to add movement and color. Live plants are wonderful if you can care for them; otherwise, realistic faux options are low-maintenance and look great year-round. Consider varying plant heights and combining a trailing plant with a compact topiary for contrast.

This quick refresh took less than an hour, but the change is noticeable. The shelves now feel airy and calm — like slipping into a favorite linen dress or curling up with a good book by an open window. Small, thoughtful edits can have a big seasonal impact.
