We finally replaced the foyer light—and my heart did a little happy dance.
When we moved into this house six years ago, I promised myself I would change that builder-basic pendant right away. For as long as I can remember it looked more like a bug-and-dust collection bowl than a welcoming foyer light. It worked well enough for illumination, but it was always full of debris and hung too high for me to reach and clean.

Despite my eagerness, the budget rarely allowed for a light fixture upgrade. Over the years I saved images, pinned options, and even posted about five favorite lanterns for an entryway, but most of the ones I loved were priced between $150 and $350. There was an affordable option under $100 that didn’t quite fit my style, and the one I liked best was around $250. Sometimes you have to wait for the right find.

My photoshopped pendant from three years ago …
A few months ago I stumbled upon an affordable four-light Darlana-style pendant lantern that looked just like the high-end pieces I’d admired—only this one was under $90. It checked the boxes: the crisp dark lines provided visual contrast in the entry, breaking up the round mirror and the circular windows above the door, and it came in an oil-rubbed bronze finish—the finish I usually prefer in this house. I was ready to buy it immediately.

If you haven’t heard of a Darlana pendant light before, you’re not alone. I didn’t know about them until recently either. They’re those stylish lantern-style pendants that have been popping up in home décor and interior design magazines—and they can be pricey. This particular bargain version offered the same clean lines and classic lantern look without the hefty price tag.

My husband installed the new lantern a few weeks ago, and I find myself lingering in the foyer or glancing over from the couch just to admire it. The fixture brightens the space beautifully and the darker metal lines add much-needed contrast against the round shapes already present in the entry.

We don’t have a ladder tall enough for our 12-foot foyer ceiling, so for the installation we got creative: we moved the large farmhouse table under the light and put our ladder on top of it. It worked, but I’ll be honest—it wasn’t the most conventional or recommended method. Think of it as a temporary, resourceful solution rather than a how-to. Safety first if you plan to tackle a project like this yourself.

For bulbs, we used frosted bent-tip decorative candelabra bulbs rated around 25 watts. They produce a soft, clean glow that lights the foyer evenly without being harsh. The effect is warm and welcoming—exactly what we wanted for this space.
This update was the simple, affordable refresh the foyer desperately needed. It transformed the entryway from a neglected corner to a polished, intentional space that feels more like home.
