7 Kitchen Refresh Ideas That Transform Your Space

Discover seven easy ways to refresh a kitchen without paint or wallpaper. Small details make the biggest impact when refreshing a kitchen.

Kitchens can be challenging to personalize. Unless you have a large budget for new appliances or plan a full renovation, it can be hard to put your own stamp on the space. But adding fresh decor and thoughtful details can transform a kitchen from bland to personal rather quickly.

This is how the kitchen looked after I painted, but before I changed anything else.

When I first saw the photos of the kitchen in the online real estate listing, I wasn’t inspired — the layout seemed odd and the strong yellow tone felt overwhelming. Since moving in, I’ve grown to love the room. The natural light is beautiful; the white cabinets, neutral countertops, glass-front cabinets and rich wood floors were either things I loved or elements I could work with.

At first I was disappointed the kitchen didn’t open to the living room, but I quickly appreciated the layout. The island is perfect for preparing lunches while making breakfast, and my daughters love the little counter bar near the sink where they can play or do homework while I cook dinner.

Although I wasn’t thrilled about another corner sink and the small triangular ledge behind it, I value that the sink faces the window and lets me see the backyard and the kitchen table at the same time.

When we moved in, I knew I wanted to make the kitchen feel like ours. The yellow walls had to go, but because the kitchen connects to hallways, a stairwell and the entryway, I opted for a neutral paint color that would work with the whole house.

Edgecomb Gray Walls

I chose Edgecomb Gray and it made a dramatic improvement right away. After painting, the next step was decorating and swapping simple elements that were easy to change. My goal was to add texture, color, beauty and more functionality while keeping the space calm and cohesive. I began with a design mood board focused on light blues and greens and brass accents — those original ideas guided the refresh even as the project evolved over the year it took me to complete.

The timeline stretched over a year partly because of budget choices and indecision, and partly because of long ship times and supply mistakes. I’ve shared other posts about the eat-in kitchen reveal and how I created a functional drop zone by the garage door, which includes more details on storage and layout choices.

7 Simple Ways to Add Personality to a Kitchen without Gutting It

I wasn’t planning to replace appliances or add wallpaper. Instead I focused on decorating and swapping small, impactful items. Here are the seven changes that made the biggest difference in my kitchen, along with how I approached each area and why it matters.

Kitchen Details in a Makeover

I eventually found a solution for the awkward triangular space behind the sink, and now it’s one of my favorite views in the kitchen.

1. Lighting

Lighting dramatically changes the feel of a room. While some fixtures can be expensive, there are affordable options that make a big difference. Most of the kitchen lighting is recessed, but the pendant over the table was outdated and broken. Replacing it with an understated brass chandelier transformed the dining area.

Adding lamps is another easy way to change the mood. I love a soft lamp glow in the evening — when the kitchen is cleaned up for the night, leaving only a lamp on makes the space feel cozy and restful.

For months I experimented with ways to use the small triangular ledge behind the sink. I tried different options until I landed on a lamp, a real pothos plant and a candle. A marble tray with pretty soap and lotion dispensers elevates the simple act of washing hands and helps the corner read as a styled vignette rather than awkward leftover space.

2. Hardware

New knobs and pulls are like jewelry for cabinets. Swapping hardware is an easy update and can dramatically change a room’s style. The previous owner had replaced brass hardware with polished nickel in this house; I changed it back to aged brass to warm the space and tie in other brass accents throughout the kitchen.

I swapped brushed nickel cabinet knobs for brass mushroom-style knobs and added a matching pull to the custom dishwasher panel, which also serves as a convenient place to hang a drying towel.

3. Rugs

Rugs add comfort, texture and pattern. I considered a rug under the table but decided against it because of the inevitable crumbs and spills with young kids. Instead, I put a small seagrass rug in front of the sink with a cushioned rug underneath for comfort. Seagrass hides dirt well, and I use carpet tape to keep it in place. I also added a washable runner between the stove and the cabinets for both comfort and style.

I also installed a runner on the stairs that lead into the kitchen. The runner softens the stairs and brings another layer of texture to the overall scheme.

4. Window Treatments

A room often feels unfinished because it lacks window treatments. Curtains, shades or blinds can add softness, pattern and privacy. My design inspiration included a botanical fabric I loved, which I used for a custom Roman shade over the sink. A custom shade brings texture and a tailored look without sacrificing light.

I swapped blinds in the eat-in area and added bamboo Roman shades to the French doors. I chose not to add curtains to other windows because I didn’t want to block the abundant natural light and the lovely transom windows above.

5. Plants

Greenery instantly enlivens a space. I keep a real pothos plant behind the sink — it grows quickly and is easy to water. If you struggle with houseplants, start with a pothos. I also use high-quality faux plants in places where real plants aren’t practical.

6. Art

Art completes every room. Whether you choose an affordable print or a more costly original, artwork adds personality and finishes the space. In my kitchen, delicate watercolor prints bring color and tie into the botanical tones used elsewhere. Scalloped wicker frames were a splurge, but they added the perfect finishing touch.

7. Bar Stools

Swapping counter or bar stools is a relatively small change that adds instant style. I searched extensively for stools with backs, swivel seats, strong construction and easy-to-clean materials. After trying a few options, I landed on swivel counter stools that are family-friendly and visually versatile.

BONUS: Custom Dishwasher Panel

Replacing a visible black dishwasher with a model that accepts a custom cabinet-style panel can help a dishwasher blend seamlessly into your cabinetry. When we moved in, the old dishwasher didn’t work, so replacing it and adding a painted custom panel made the appliance feel built-in and cohesive with the rest of the kitchen.

My Kitchen Refresh Before and Afters

Before-and-after photos are always satisfying. I attempted to match several shots to the angles from the original real estate photos for a direct comparison. While I don’t have the same wide-angle lens the realtor used, you can still see how paint, lighting, hardware, textiles and styling transformed the space.
