Most of us only move a few times in our lives, and having a solid plan makes all the difference. These packing tips for moving will protect your sanity and help you arrive at your new home organized and ready.
If you’ve been following The Turquoise Home recently, you know that we just moved.

We’re thrilled with our new home, but moving—especially during the holidays—turned our schedule upside down. Balancing two young children, running this blog, and holiday planning made staying organized essential. The strategies below kept the chaos manageable and helped us move with less stress.
If you enjoy organization as much as I do, you’ll want to assign a place for everything while packing. That approach not only streamlines the move but also saves time later when you need to find things in your new house.
Helpful Packing Tips for Moving
Below are practical packing tips for moving that I rely on every time we relocate. Use them to make your next move more efficient and far less stressful.
1. Get Rid of Clutter Before You Pack
One of the best moving tips is to purge items you haven’t used in the last year. Why pay to move things that no longer serve you?
Moving is a natural reset—take this opportunity to deep-clean and declutter closets, drawers, and cabinets as you pack. Broken, duplicate, or unused items should be tossed or donated. Gently used items that still have value can be sold locally through neighborhood marketplaces or a yard sale.
If selling is too time-consuming, donate. Many charities and thrift stores welcome household goods and will even pick up donations in some areas. Decluttering reduces the number of boxes, lowers moving costs, and helps potential buyers see your home instead of your possessions if you are selling.

2. Work in Short Spurts
Packing an entire house at once is overwhelming. Instead, create a realistic schedule and chip away at the work in focused bursts. Even one concentrated hour a day can accomplish a lot. Alternatively, set aside 1–2 hour blocks when your schedule allows, and tackle one room or task at a time.
This approach reduces stress, keeps momentum, and prevents packing burnout.
3. Pack One Room at a Time
Contain the chaos by finishing one room before moving on to the next. Constantly jumping between rooms wastes time and makes it harder to track what’s packed. Complete a room, label those boxes, and enjoy the small wins as you check rooms off your list.
4. Use Sturdy, High-Quality Boxes
Invest in good moving boxes and tape. Grocery boxes may be free, but they’re often flimsy, inconsistent in size, and can carry dirt or pests. Quality moving boxes protect your belongings and stack neatly in the truck.

If you’re on a tight budget, check local marketplaces for used moving boxes in good condition. Reusing sturdy boxes is economical and eco-friendly.
5. Implement a Clear Labeling System
A practical label system saves time on moving day and during unpacking. Color-coding boxes by room is the easiest method: assign each room a color and mark the box with that color plus a brief description of contents. For example, “Kitchen — Pots & Pans” or “Master Closet — Sweaters.”
Take a few extra minutes to list the most important items on each box. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re searching for a specific item on the first day in your new home.
6. Use Baggies for Hardware and Small Parts
When disassembling furniture, immediately place screws, bolts, and small parts into labeled zip-top bags. Tape the bag to the corresponding piece or keep it in the box with the disassembled item. Include any instruction manuals if you have them.
Tip: Never mix hardware from different furniture pieces in the same bag—keep everything separate to make reassembly simple.
7. Protect Fragile Items
Wrap breakables individually using bubble wrap, packing paper, or corrugated cardboard. Fill any empty space in the box to prevent shifting and use sturdy boxes for extra protection. Proper packing reduces the risk of broken dishes, glassware, and decor.
8. Pack an Essentials Box for Moving Day
Keep a separate, clearly labeled essentials box or bag for the days immediately before and after your move. Store it in your car or keep it accessible so you can grab it quickly. Items to include:
- Toilet paper and paper towels
- Toothbrushes and basic toiletries
- Medications and first-aid items
- Garbage bags
- A box cutter or scissors
- Favorite toys, books, and devices (plus chargers) for kids
- A mug or cup for each family member and a small coffee maker if you need it right away
- Clothes for a few days and laundry detergent
- Dish soap, disposable plates, and utensils
- Any other daily essentials you’ll need immediately
Having these basics on hand prevents frantic searches and lets you focus on unpacking and settling in.
9. Arrange Childcare for Moving Day
Moving day requires your full attention. If possible, arrange for family, friends, or a babysitter to watch young children while movers load and unload. Keeping kids out of the way reduces stress and keeps everyone safer. Book childcare well in advance to avoid last-minute scrambling.

These packing and moving tips require some upfront effort, but they make the entire process smoother and help you arrive at your new home more organized. Decluttering while packing saves space and money, and thoughtful labeling and protection of items save time and headaches during unpacking.
